Nominate for Movie of the Week in July - Blockbusters
It is summer and that usually means a good time for blockbusters! So lets see if we can find 5 good blockbusters for July. I am not making hard definitions for what a blockbuster movie is, but I might have some questions if you pick a movie that got only $100,000 at the box office.
Rules
- Be considered a blockbuster movie
- Not one we have done before
- Only one nomination per user
- Please only nominate if you intent to participate
- Upvote the post(s) with a nomination you would like to be picked for discussion next month
- Please state the title of the movie clearly on the first line, and add any additional general comments in the next paragraph to keep voting simple
In case of ties in the number of votes, random.org will decide. Voting closes Sunday.
Snatch
If you haven't seen it, you should. If you have seen it, then you know why I'm nominating it.
So, I know there's not hard rules for this. But for a while to get labeled a "blockbuster" you had to gross at least 300M WW. Although the new Golden Globe for Box Office Achievement has a minimum of 100M WW to be considered a "blockbuster." And some people would say 500M+ or 700M+ are the true cut offs for blockbusters.
So with that in mind, and I hope others maybe have that in mind as well when suggesting movies, I'll go ahead and suggest Mission Impossible: Fallout which I consider to be one of the best blockbusters of the 2010s.
Barbie
$1.4bn box office. I wanna see it again and maybe it could inspire an interesting discussion
I didn't see it during the initial release, and it's now one of those things on my "I should eventually watch that" list. Having a discussion would be a nice incentive to bump it up.
Edge of Tomorrow
Released in June 6, 2014 (United States) and ended up with 370M box office. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt fight aliens in a fun sci-fi action flick.
I am throwing in The Mummy from 1999 as the fifth film and the schedule for July will be:
This is also be the last month of movie of the week. In this format at least. Will need to find a different approach if we can find interest in that.
While interest in this "movie of the week" thing has never been high, it does seem to have dwindled recently and it has become mostly just a way to crowdsource my own watchlist. If no suggestions come in, I will just add two more blockbusters for July and end it after that. I'll be happy to hear of any suggestions to rethink this format if anyone is still interested in doing something like this here on Tildes.
I have tried to participate over the months but struggled with a 90 minute investment of time. However I wonder if part of the issue is seasonal. People in the northern hemisphere are spending more time outside right now
You don’t have to listen to this, but I’ll go ahead and throw in A Star is Born and 1917 as atypical blockbusters (that you haven’t seen).
I didn't actually realise it was a thing and I'll happily vote and suggest movies (as I have already done).
Maybe a switch up on the style, and list 5-7 movies as a poll instead? That limits what people can vote for. Then watch the top 3 or 4 weekly and do a review for people to enjoy and comment on?
I suspect that Tildes usage has dwindled. Many folks are over the Reddit saga and have returned. My life is crazy busy so I haven't had much time to sit and look at Tildes, but when I do, it's a lot of news posts which I do not find overly interesting.
I shall try and be more involved, definitely do not bin this movie thread.
I really appreciate your supportive words. I agree that the general user activity on Tildes has dwindled a bit recently and it makes it harder to reach critical mass for such a thing to really work. I am not seeking high participation, but recently we barely see participation from those who have nominated the movies and that makes it just a weird way for me, and perhaps @cloud_loud, to crowdsource additions to our watchlist. Given that, I somehow doubt that me picking a handful of movie titles to pick from will be much better.
I don't know what, if any, recurring format is the right one. Maybe something more informal during the midweek movie talk where those of us interested, can coordinate what we intend to watch the following week so we have something to talk about.
