It's disappointing because it's a rote remake of an existing movie, while simultaneously defanging the original movie's views (on haoles/tourists, on the nature of family, etc). At least, that's...

I actually really liked the take on family that the remake gave- that while Nani is overwhelmed, and the system originally wants to take Lilo away (for justifiable reasons), in the end she learns she can rely on a wider definition of family to help her. The community, in the shape of Aunt Tutu and David, steps up so that Nani can still pursue her own potential as a marine biologist while being reassured that Lilo will be looked after. Along with the original’s message of found family, it integrates a message of the wider community as family (it takes a village etc).
I and my kids loved it- I especialy liked the way it integrated values of an extended community family alongside the original’s message about found family.

Well that’s disappointing imo.

Live action remakes are also offensive to me: we should be remaking more live action things as animation instead.
