I’m not going to tear this one apart — like I did that other Poggy video about Sid from Toy Story — because I think it’s slightly plausible. I don’t think it was the intent of the writers, but the movie does provide room for the possibility. The callout of exactly how disgusting that sweetbread recipe would be is notable supporting evidence, because the movie goes out of its way to make a point of it, which doesn’t really contribute to the main story, and it does seem out of character for Gusteau as he’s presented.

The only real counterpoint I can think of is that Remy’s culinary skill seems to be genuinely rare among rats. He’s mocked by his family and considered an outsider. It’s hard to believe Gusteau would be able to find/breed enough rats with this natural talent to keep the ruse going over so many generations. It doesn’t seem to be a heritable trait, so I don’t buy the suggestion that Remy is a descendant of that original bloodline or whatever.

Fun to think about though. I do love the idea that if Gusteau had his own “little chef(s)”, it was his balding that ended it.

Edit: or not, been a while since I watched it.

I like that chef Skinner instantly suspects that a rat is the cook which does strengthen the theory.

I haven’t watched this video, but I have watched ratatouille many times. This is not accurate. Skinner realizes Remy is the chef at 1:19:45 (watch for about a minute). He doesn’t realize until Linguini says it pretty explicitly and Skinner overhears it. Skinner literally says at that time, surprised « the rat is the cook ».

I really like this theory along with the one in his YouTube comments about Chef Gusteau losing his hair so he couldn't be controlled anymore.
