This is so much fascinating context. I have loved Annapurna Interactive games, and Annapurna movies — though I wasn’t aware Annapurna even did movies or that there was a connection there. I certainly never suspected that thoughtful, artistic indie company had any association with the Ellisons. Never heard of Megan before. So I’m learning a lot here and have a lot of very conflicted feelings about the whole thing, which are slightly assuaged by this picture of her place in the family dynamic.

Filmmakers loved Megan though. Paul Thomas Anderson worked with her three times throughout the 2010s with The Master, Inherent Vice, and Phantom Thread. She was known for giving filmmakers blank checks before that was Netflix’s thing and gave them full control. Obviously there’s only so many times you can do that before you start bleeding out money, but what really made the company go under was her attempt at becoming a distributor.
Throughout Annapurna’s tenure, only Zero Dark Thirty, American Hustle, and True Grit (which was co-produced by David Ellison’s Skydance) were box office hits. Everything else lost money.
This is the way to be a billionaire’s child imo. Like Travis Knight with Laika burning his fathers money.
