I swear I just saw an ad last week for a movie that feels like it had a very similar premise. Two teen girls, besties since grade school, kind of drifting apart approaching graduation, and then getting swept off into another universe and needing to find get home. It looked like the movie was set in like Hawaii or a Pacific islander nation. Can't think of the name though. I'll come back and edit this if I think of the name or see the ad again.

All the same, I'm left to wonder if another studio was able to scoop up the idea and maybe some of the creative team.

Forgotten Island? I had the same thought... Saw this article and was like, "that made it all the way to a trailer and got canceled?"

Yes! That's it! Thanks for sharing. I had googled around a bit and couldn't find it, but it's been nawing at the back of my head since I'd read the article.

    My first thought.

“The comparisons to KPop Demon Hunters are pretty undeniable because there were musical aspects to it, and it was a rip-roaring time,” the individual says. “I can imagine that whoever at Disney denied Be Fri to exist looks at KPop and is kicking themselves like, ‘Shit, I can’t believe Netflix is doing exactly what we wanted to do.'”

    My first thought.

I've heard some rumblings around that the movie just wasn't in good shape when it was cancelled, and the appetite to try and save it was poor considering the pressure from Lightyear and Elio, two movies that rank low in the PIXAR canon and were widely seen as "just ok" at best. Disney execs not wanting a "girl power" movie is typical and believable, but I think there's more nuance here than the headline implies.

To wit, Hoppers is a success, and while not a "girl power" movie it is certainly a movie about a strong female protagonist.

I dont really remember hearing rumors that Lightyear was in bad shape prior to release, I was under the impression that Disney was internally confident in it. But Elio for sure was a mess and they essentially made it twice to course correct and it didn’t even pay off.
