So what are you guys' opinions or hopes/fears of Disney aquiring the rights to X-Men?

For me personally I'm excited because I really like what they've done with the MCU. It's not perfect but I think they've done a fine job so far and would prefer them to have a go at the X-Men (and FF) franchise. As a long time fan the movies have been hit and miss with the Fox X-Men for me so far. For example:

Love:

First Class
X2
Logan

Like:

DOFP
X1
The Wolverine

Don't care for whatsoever:

Wolverine Origins
X3
Apocalypse

So really Fox did okay with the rights but not as good as they could have. The Fantastic Four specifically movies are laughable. Hell the Roger Corman flick was better than it's successors. I didn't even bother with the most recent as you could tell it was slap dashed together.

So what do you guys think?

Ding ding ding. I love most Disney movies as much as the next guy, but it's pretty horrifying that 40% of cinema is now under the same corporation.

I'm no laissez-faire capitalist, but I think Disney will eventually collapse when their cash cows run dry. until then, these marvel movies sure are neat. purely from a fan's standpoint, its really cool that they've adapted such a wide array of comics into films, while trimming the fat that a lot of long-running comic series are plagued by. I just hope they eventually have some endpoint or theyre gonna run the franchise and the genre into the ground.

On the other side, the commodification of culture is essentially the death of it and sort of how we got our mass media to this gross point.

Not much I could really do about it though, the executive and legislative branches are in the corporations' pocketbooks. Even if I tried for the rest of my life running for elections at the local level nothing would get done. Without strong action by government, our only real hope for corporations to end their monopolies is suicide via invisible hand.

Yeah, and it's pretty clear it's not the end as the media industry is quickly being absorbed into a few select corporations. There will be more acquisitions and disney's power and influence will only grow. We need strong enforcement of antitrust regulations.

We used to have an entertainment industry in the US. Now we have Disney. We should be doing them like we did Standard Oil and AT&T.

They're still on the books, but the US government doesn't enforce them. Apparently free enterprise means permitting monopolies and oligopolies.

...And it's currently one of the largest money makers in the west. If a government were ever willing, I can see the challenge in trying to break up an industry that still makes so much money overseas.

Feige et al did amazing work reimagining an established property for the MCU (Spider-man). They did amazing work with virtual unknowns (Guardians). I’m 100% confident they’ll do amazing things with the X-men and the F4 in the MCU.

One day I hope they do a ‘New F4’ movie. The team of Spider-man, Ghost Rider, Wolverine, and Hulk was the coolest thing from my childhood while reading older comics. The team makeup is dumb, but I’m sure they could make it work!

I shudder to imagine what a PG-13 Deadpool hammered into the Disney-Marvel formula might look like and hope we don't have to find out.

I just don't understand the point of this type of comment. It seems like such a dead end to conversation of the topic. Do you have some thoughts on what they could do in the films to make you care?

Not really, I wish Hollywood would stop making superheroes movies altogether to be honest, it was fun a little while, but I think we've got enough.

Fair enough but that's not the topic being discussed here. You don't need to shit on threads that you don't care about, just move on, maybe even filter the tags.

The cast could remain mostly the same but we would definitely want a reboot on the continuity, considering how professor X and Magneto would be in their 80s by Infinity War (set in 2018?).
