If it's gonna be anything like Won't You Be My Neighbor I'll be crying every ten minutes; hell I could barely make it through that trailer.

It's absolutely cathartic. Don't be afraid of that!

I've recommended that documentary to anyone who will listen. My son and I still watch Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood on the reg.

There will have to be suspension of disbelief, as there is with any movie, and while Tom Hanks is undoubtedly an amazing actor, I don't think get got the voice right. While not necessarily expecting a 1:1 copy, the pacing is off and he still sounds like Tom Hanks in a Mister Rogers suit.

I had the same reaction but I think it's more than the voice. I can't help but see Tom Hanks playing a character - doing it well, but still. I think it might be that because he's naturally built that much more solidly than Mr. Rogers was, his body language feels off... and of course, Mr. Rogers being so iconic, it's hard to not notice the difference.

I think the only movies I've ever seen him in that I couldn't not see Tom Hanks for were the Davinci Code movies and Cloud Atlas.

P.S. I was trying to think of other actors who could pull off being Mr. Rogers but was coming up short. Who else could do it? I'm sure there are those who would give it their all, but actually beaming the wholesomeness of Mr. Rogers? Not sure.

Hanks won't be a complete 1:1(but honestly, it's pretty rare. I think Malek/Mercury is probably the closest I've personally seen) but he's just so good that it might take me 10 minutes before I forget I'm watching Hanks and not Rogers.

I'm terrible with actor names, but the only one that comes to mind that I think could do it because he seems capable of any role is Gary Oldman.

Gary Oldman creates new characters though, he doesn't often emulate real people. The latter is much, MUCH harder to do. He kinda sorta mostly did it with Winston Churchill, but there is a much bigger time gap and much less definition in people's memory of Churchill that allows you to overlook the differences compared with Rogers.

That's how I felt with Meryl Streep playing Julia Child. It's the mark of a superior actor that they can help you suspend disbelief in that way. I think Hanks can pull it off.

Yeah, but no one can pull off a perfect Mr Rodgers, just like no one can pull off a perfect Carl Sagan.
