They also did the switcharoo that @aphoenix linked to.

After Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith left Sunny Day Real Estate (I believe its because Jeremy Enigk turned Christian and did his own switcharoo on the band... but that's just gossip), Goldsmith didn't like that Grohl rerecorded all of the drums for the second record... and it seems he just couldn't deal with Grohl's standard, which most can't.
Anyway, Hawkins was touring with Alanis Morissette at the time and Grohl scooped him up -- and the rest is history. I'm not a HUGE Foo Fighters fan or anything, but Hawkins seemed to just fit with the group, especially as they aged. He was an excellent drummer and all around musician.
That Hawkins could keep up / survive the studio with Grohl is a testament to his skill and he'll be rightly memorialized for it.
It's just sad. This CBS article says that he had a shitload of drugs in his system. I believe he had a close call with heroin over a decade ago, too.

That's it, that's exactly how I feel about it, and I have seen so much with Dave and Taylor, and that fire that he brought to the band - and the world - is just gone.
Celebrity deaths don't usually get to me, but I feel like I did when I was in high school and I learned that Kurt Cobain died; I have that same "what the actual fuck" feeling that I had then.
Unfortunately it’s looking like he went out on some substances. I’m not making a moral judgment on the guy. You just hate to see it. It’s so preventable.

Some videos showcasing Taylor. These are just some personal favourites, not recent things:
My Hero live at Wembley. Catch Taylor's pure just at about 3:16.

I hope they keep the band going.
