Who are your favorite Twitch musicians?
More and more lately I'm using Twitch for background music while working. It's kind of like having a low-key live concert going on every day. Here are some of my favorites (I follow a ton of others but these are the ones that I'll usually hop over to as soon as I see them go live):
- Joliet4 has an absolutely goosbumps-insane voice, and just released her first album on bandcamp.
- Mandy Prater is a pretty regular streamer, but usually later in the day for me so it's rare she's on while I'm working.
- Tyler Levs has really cool originals, does a lot of loops and covers, love him.
- JXOTX doesn't stream as often but has a big nostalgia factor for me because he covers a lot of stuff from the 90s that I grew up with.
- Astravert does all original improvised electric guitar jams. Insane skills.
- Fish in a Birdcage does mostly originals on his electric cello--really unique and awesome sound.
Anyone else into live Twitch music? Would love some recommendations on other streamers to check out and follow.
Tier 1 recomendations
Prog Rock Piano Bar is a very friendly multi instrumental musician from NY who focuses on classic prog rock in this channel although he'll play other songs if you donate for it. Professionally he has played gigs and weddings (he knows a lot of dirty toasts ;) and over 3000 songs). Streams mondays and wednesdays on a normal week. Think he's Mandy Prater's friend.
A Couple Streams (AeSeaEs) are a couple from Texas who sing and play stringed instruments to very chill covers of a vast range of songs as well as their own originals. Insanely good voices too, Allie's might be the very best on Twitch. I think they've been
on break working on an album unfortunately, but I've been listening to them for years and they're generally very reliable. Cool christmas day stream every year! EDIT: Allie has been ill, but they're returning today with a restricted song list to reduce strain on her voice. You probably already know of lara6683, an australian pianist who plays music from videogames and movies, including medleys. She does live learns as well. She can pump out piano arrangements like it's nothing and is very popular.
I also listen to Joliet4.
Tier 2 recommendations - mainly because they're difficult for me to catch online, but just as good:
Jenny Colquitt is a british singer and multi instrumentalist from the UK with several original songs under her belt. If you like joliet's voice you might like hers as well. I'm not sure what she's been up to, doesn't seem to have streamed in the last couple of weeks. Could be working on an album.
Steve Forward is a highly skilled british guitarrist who plays mainstream classic rock and prog rock. Very nice visual production with camera angles and transitions if you're actually watching the stream. I think his repertoire is a little small and he always seems to stream while I'm away or listening to someone else...
Johnny and Heidi are a talented couple originally from the Nashville country music scene, who both sing and I think he plays guitar and she plays the piano, having trouble remembering exactly; he's an industry veteran who has worked on various popular releases and she's a top tier singer. They play all sorts of covers (not just country) and their streams are usually long variety events with musical challenges, trivia and other minigames with the twitch chat. Very friendly environment. Unfortunately not only do they usually stream too late for it to be convenient for me, they don't seem to have streamed recently (might be on tour or vacation).
Loopers
I'm not a huge fan of loopers, since the process of creating a loop tends to irritate me on a fundamental level (I can't stand repeating complex sounds). However I can partake of these in small doses and they deserve a mention:
Joshua Woo streams frequently and reliably. Fun and high energy, covers all sorts of things, notably he has an amazing vocal range capable of covering Queen songs.
ortoPilot is also a very friendly and upbeat stream. Very talented musician.
I'm a fan of JMusicBand, though the band broke up because of covid. Their lead saxophonist still performs on the regular, and there's a huge backlog of great stuff on YouTube.
Marc Rebillet (Twitch, YouTube) is the only musician I regularly watch livesteam, although he hasn't done one in a while since he's currently on tour. He's an incredibly talented improvisational musician and singer, who uses a loopstation, and also tends to be quite comedic, a bit like Reggie Watts (who he has actually streamed with, along with Erykah Badu).
Oh, hey. Speak of the devil. Marc is finally back to streaming! :) From an hour ago: straight chilling
cc: @Bauke, since I know you're a fan too.
He calls it a Penisaur, but it's actually a Dickosaurus. ;) He shows it off at about 22m into the stream.
A buddy listens to iriskymm a lot. datsunnmusic is more my style.
I don’t know if they’re on twitch but I want to shout out Schmoyoho. They’ve been killing it in the songify landscape for over a decade.
