I have to say, I think this is the most interesting super bowl half time performance I've ever watched. I don't speak spanish, and I didn't know who Bad Bunny was ahead of time, but I really enjoyed the little narrative touches and the music overall.

I thought the stage setup and the props were really interesting. I'm searching for the right words ... maybe simple (in a good way) and authentic and charming. It was a refreshing change from animated, motorized stages, crazy light shows, and pyrotechnics.

I don't know if I should read too much into it as a political message, but it's hard to see it as anything other than political. I know he's Puerto Rican, which is a territory of the US, but I don't think that kind of nuance matters to the racist Trump supporters. So to see an organization like the NFL make a statement like this good, I think? Watching the show felt like a small sparkle of hope.

Given the state of affairs, it was a political message. He called out all the countries in the continent of America after saying “God Bless America”. The United States is sure making foreign enemies of our neighbors right now, so bringing out the flags of all the countries together is saying something.

I think the beauty of this halftime show was precisely that it didn’t feel like a political statement, since that really brought home the idea that this shouldn’t be political. Bad Bunny just showed a fun and authentic reflection of the Puerto Rican culture, and they are as much a part of the U.S. as any Spanish-speaking immigrant and as any citizen or non-citizen of the U.S. Sure, people are afforded different rights to vote and to own land and whatnot, but the message of unity——that all involved are real people worthy of dignity——was the take-home for me. I think that’s what we need right now, and it should not be partisan.

I know these things are planned months in advance, and Trump had taken office only a month before the 2025 Super Bowl, but it's hard to see how Kendrick's half-time show wasn't a response to Trumpism.

So yeah, it is interesting to see what's going on in the NFL. Previous years weren't political at all, if I'm remembering correctly. 2024 starred Usher and 2023 was Rhianna. These were just standard shows with artists entertaining, if I'm remembering correctly. 2022 had several big-name rappers/hip-hop artists like Eminem, Snoop, Mary J. Blige, and a few others. I don't remember the show, but given the focus on rap/hip-hop and the lineup being almost all black artists, there probably was a little bit of politics. But not anywhere close to last year and this year's levels.

As far as Bad Bunny's show, I liked it. It wasn't the most entertaining to me, since I don't listen to Bad Bunny because I don't speak Spanish, but the music had me a moving a bit. I thought the celebration of Puerto Rican and overall Latino culture was great. Plus very needed in times like this.

It's all a change in direction from the way they locked out Colin Kaepernick for kneeling during the national anthem. That, with the concussion stuff, had made me mostly post-footballhandegg. This was the only game we watches this year (or last year).

But still I'm glad to see the change. I'll take it from any quarter.

Green Day was also the pre-game performance, there's definitely someone in the NFL that's getting some mention out. The nuance is definitely lost on racist trumpers for sure, there's a clip out...

The nuance is definitely lost on racist trumpers for sure, there's a clip out there with Tomi Lahren asking a guest about what they thought about Bad Bunny being a performer being "anti-american" and being swiftly corrected by the guest saying "Puerto Rico is part of America, dear"
