The first time I heard this song I didn't think much of it, but the live performance lifted it a lot! I definitely understand why it resonated with voters, but I was surprised it did so well with the juries as well.

It's worth watching the winner's performance as well. With no costumes, an unprepared camera crew, and just some hastily arranged dining room chairs as props, they still managed to nail the performance with raw charm.

I feel like the great performance likely helped in the vote by making it possible for people to view the entry highly based on the song or the performance independently. It's a performance that feels difficult and impressive to do, not just one that is conceptually well done, and that may have helped with the juries. It's impressive even if you don't like the song: the performance holds up well muted. My partner and I (with the disclaimer that we didn't watch live, not wanting to up live viewing numbers) both disliked the song, but felt the victory was deserved (with the additional caveat that it was, for obvious reasons and rightfully so, a year of comparatively mediocre entries).

And yes, the winner's performance was great: the 'we're doing it here!' of the performers, to the 'they're doing it here!?' of everyone around them that turned into some combination of dance party and rush to move furniture out of the way, to the walk across to the stage, felt like some combination of perfect planning and perfect spontaneity.

    Absolute queen!

While I'm sad Romania got murdered in the jury vote (we still made 3rd), Dara put on the whole show last night, it was undeniable she belonged in the top 5.

For me personally, you could have shuffled the top 5 in any way you wanted and I'd have been fine with that song winning (detaching it from the country of origin so I don't get decapitated).

... but i am going to have a talk with the Moldovans.

Not gonna lie, I also really enjoyed Italy's song, but I was a little surprised it ended up making top 5. I guess I thought people would see it as too old school/boring.

Finland was another of my top picks, and I thought it'd do better than it did!

Italy's was a bop! I'm just a bit disappointed by Sal's performance, it felt like he was so over it already. But the song is good and I'm gonna listen to it for good long while.

    How the turntables

I didn't watch it at almost at all this year (I only watched the jury+televote results yesterday) as my favourite eurovision country was not participating, but I listened to all of the songs on spotify a few days back and this was one of my 3 favourites. Congratulations to DARA!
