What do you Tilderinos think about chillhop and other down-tempo genres?
I've been a big fan of down-tempo electronica ever since I discovered Zero 7's Simple Things in an FYE about thirteen years ago. I can pretty much listen to anything (music is fun!), but I've always found myself coming back to down-tempo and the like.
Lately, I've been digging through various Youtube music compilations, like Homework Radio and ChilledCow, and it's so good. I still like to find new artists (the local college radio is great for this), but I still find myself coming home from work and throwing on a compilation like the one's mentioned above.
So, I was wondering if any of my fellow Tilderinos liked this sort of music too, and in the spirit of creating discussion, I figured I'd ask! Ya dig?
:)
It's real good for reading and having a beer.
I like it when I program. Especially lofi hip hop and double especially when it’s cut with cowboy bebop sounds bites.
I’ve checked out chilhop and like it quite a bit, and also trap music which is also cool but seems heavy on the drug references on YouTube.
Where is all this wonderful stuff coming from?
Try checking out some of the channels on SomaFM sometime: https://somafm.com/
They have a bunch of different chill/downtempo stations and have been running for over 20 years now. I used to listen to their stations a lot.
Yoink.
That's what I'm talkin' about. Thanks Deimos.
Still drinking out of my somafm mug from 5 years ago! Used to LOVE defjam radio on somafm, but like all stations on there it sometimes depends on the dj. Some really fun and interesting stuff on there thats worth a browse.
I listen to chillhop to relax or just as bgm for other stuff. My favorite artists are nujabes, tomppabeats, jinsang, englewood, driver and the deli. Flamingosis's album "bright moments" is sort of a jazzy chillhopish album and I'd recommend it too.
I also like the album "skiptracing" by mildhighclub. It's a downtempo psychedelic rock album that has some of my favorite songs. MacDemarco's stuff is also pretty chill; 2 and Salad Days are my favorite albums of his
Oh man, Flamingosis. I absolutely love his version of Groove Remote from Hey! Arnold. That's actually how I discovered him! I'll have to check out that album, it sounds right up my alley. Thanks for the recommendation.
I love having the youtube triphop/down-tempo mixes on when playing Fallout, reading or falling asleep. It's so zen and seems to help my thoughts flow more freely.
I enjoy it a lot. I have a Spotify playlist I've been slowly building over the past few years. If you want to check it out:

I am all about checking out playlists! Thanks, man, some good stuff on there.
I was introduced to Blackmill by my fiancé to my great life improvement. Chillstep has found its way into my work life as a way to focus or relax. I found it interesting that it fill both roles for me.
Perhaps it’s my tinnitus that makes me excessively compelled to hearing music constantly, or just the fact that it’s been around me all my life that compels time to always listen to something. Chillstep is something both my fiancé and I enjoy, and can play constantly in the background for good life ambience
Not related to chillhop but music helps with my tinnitus. Eventually you distract yourself into not noticing it, even without music
Simple Things is a great album. The Garden is one of my top-five albums of all time. I'm also a fan of When it Falls
Really, I just fucking love Zero 7
It's probably my most explored area of music. Started with the Mushroom Jazz series years ago then evolved to include artists like Bonobo, Nightmares on Wax, Wax Tailor, Aim, ProleteR, Blockhead, Damu the Fudgemunk, Tycho, and really any hip-hop-influenced downtempo music. Just look at how much of it I've posted to reddit. There's really nothing better for getting work done (for me at least).
I highly recommend Radio NULA if you want to discover more obscure artists.
Mushroom Jazz! That's another awesome series that I found via Youtube. I'll definitely check out that radio station, thanks!
If you have SiriusXM, my go-to channel is 53-Chill:
Back when I did have it, that and the Grateful Dead radio were about all I'd listen to!
Yep, I listen to it pretty regularly. It's my default listening.
I have a soft spot for cosmic downtempo/psychill/psybreaks/psybient, but I find it tough to find.
Same here, moredhel. Seems like every day when I come home I put that on! That's not to say that I still like discovering new genres and artists, but it's so nice to have a musical comfort zone enveloping me like a joey in his mama kangaroo's pouch.
Exactly. I actually built a tool to help me discover more. I'll probably post it here when I've tested it a little and am more comfortable with it. Currently it's one massive hack.
But you are right! I especially love the imagery too ;)
When everything starts to fade to purple and neon, you know you're going the right way. If you start seeing bleached tips, you've gone too far.
