Comment on At the Florida Man Games, big crowds cheer competitors evading police, wrestling over beer in ~sports
godzilla_lives Sometimes, it's the little things.Sometimes, it's the little things.
Promoted as “the most insane athletic showdown on Earth,” the Florida Man Games poke fun at the state’s reputation for bizarre stories that involve brawling, drinking, gunfire, reptile wrangling and other antics carrying a risk of time in jail or intensive care.
James Gordon of DeLand won the first event, wolfing down a plate loaded with barbecue pork and sausage a fraction of a second before his nearest competitor. He chugged a beer to celebrate.
Larry Donnelly trained for the relay race by riding a bicycle around his neighborhood with a second bike strapped to his back. It paid off Saturday, when he won his heat after picking up a bike in each hand and running with them.
“I have an absolute disregard for self-preservation. I will do anything,” said Donnelly, 42, who owns a St. Augustine pressure-washing business and serves as captain of the five-man team Hanky Spanky. “When I was in the military, I did a little alligator wrestling.”

Comment on ‘Burning Man for rednecks’: inside King of the Hammers, the gnarliest off-road race of the year in ~sports.motorsports
godzilla_lives Bonus link to the a video featuring the author's off-road Miata :)King of the Hammers is often described as “Burning Man for rednecks,” and while the drug of choice is usually Coors Light and the cars are valued for performance rather than artistic sensibilities, the description works. This year, nearly 80,000 people came to the camping area on Means Dry Lake, drawn by the promise of friends, fuel, and two weeks of dirt-slinging, rock-spewing, mind-blowing racing.
The first four-wheeled race took place on the only-on-the-desert sections, and I’m proud to say that your humble author took the green starting flag in her lifted Miata named Buddy. I’ve raced plenty out here but always in a car that was built for the desert, not in a freaking Miata. Amid a sea of trucks three times my size, I piloted Buddy through rough and sandy sections alike. Did I think I was going to die? Yes, multiple times. But I got Buddy around the track in one piece to the slack-jawed amazement of more than one spectator.
The racing at King of the Hammers is like no other. Where F1 cancels a race because of a manhole cover and NASCAR throws a caution flag for an errant pebble on the track, the competitors at King of the Hammers are stopped by nothing. It’s the only event where part of your race strategy might just be driving off a cliff.

It sounds cliche, because it is, but it helped make my world feel bigger than just some little country town. Garden State had just come out, and my friend just happened to include it with some other Mp3s. I only found out later that they only released the one album.

I also dabble in the harmonica, and I'm decent at singing, if you give me a bucket to carry a tune in.

Hey all, hope you're doing well today. I'm visiting NYC for the first time with my wife in January (she's been a couple of times already), and I would greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations you could offer! Of course I have to do the obligatory Broadway show and pizza, and I have this nifty little guidebook, and wow as I write this I am such a tourist.
Thanks!

I've noticed that women have quite a bit more more freedom to play around with misogynic ideas. Sometimes a bit too much, I think.

What's more interesting to me is how the American movies seem to be taking over the wackier side of the franchise and leaving the serious stuff to Toho. For me, this just lets me have my cake and eat it too.
Seems the algorithm blessed us both! I've been enjoying this group since they showed up in my own feed a few days ago. I love me a good three piece band. Is it just me, or are the drummer and bassist brothers?
