I think it’s mostly that they’re really catchy and mainstream music was more of a monoculture so everyone knew the the songs. In any given season you’d only be exposed to a handful of new hit songs so they’re competing less for mindshare.
You still get catchy songs that turn into viral hits today, but there isn’t the same sense that this is one of the only 10 songs that anyone is listening too. There are too many other options.

I've recently gotten back into Semisonic, the whole first album is really good, not just Closing Time. Gone To The Movies is a favourite of mine now.
