I'm between two at the moment.

    1. My husband is going to subscribe to Apple Music, and I can easily hop on his family plan. It's the most frictionless switch. I've already trialled the app and it works well, and they have great selection and organization (better than GPM, honestly).

    2. I'm currently trialling a lazy DIY solution called Astiga that's working way better than I expected it to. It sits over music files on cloud storage and creates a Subsonic server, so it's great for people like me that have their own digital music files but no desire (or proper knowhow) to actually run a server for themselves. You, of course, have to supply your own cloud storage and music for this option so it's not an exact replacement, but I'm using it with my Bandcamp purchases and some old CD rips and I'm honestly really liking it.

Me and my wife have switched back to Spotify. We moved to GPM from Spotify about 4 years ago, after previously using Rdio until it shut down.

I mostly liked Spotify (and really liked Discover Weekly and some of the other features), but the main reason I switched us away from it in the first place was because they had a 10,000 limit for songs in your library, which doesn't work well with the way I like to use streaming services. They finally removed that limit about two months ago, so that was pretty timely for moving back.

Moving a large library from GPM to Spotify has been a bit annoying, but I ended up figuring out a pretty good way to do it for free and without needing to run scripts. I should probably write it up as a guide and post it in case it's useful for others.

Spotify also added a "Premium Duo" plan at some point, so that's nice. It's a little cheaper than we were paying for a GPM family plan, and has a "Duo Mix" that's supposed to combine our music into a playlist automatically (it doesn't seem to be working so far, but it could be neat if it does).

I did the same thing as you, I find Spotify is a lot worse for discovery than GPM music, I used the radio feature a lot and it was pretty great, and GPM seems to have a greater range of music than Spotify. I particularly miss just hitting I'm feeling lucky a few times until something I was in the mood came on and then enjoying a couple hours of mostly new-to-me music.

But Spotify playlists seem better geared for enjoying the music already in your library and really mainstream stuff, the daily mix for instance plays a lot of music I like, but nothing I haven't heard before. It's certainly a lot better than last time I tried it, I also like having a desktop client again.

For the duo mix, it took a few weeks to start working well for us, but it's pretty good now, it's a cute feature.

(Especially because current Android design makes the MicroSD card almost useless for everything else I might want to use it for)

At this point I'm subscribed to Apple Music, Spotify and GPM (GPM includes Youtube Premium and I'm still paying the early adopter rate). It's weird how they're all good in different ways. All my friends share links and follow playlists on Spotify. They really have the 'social network of music' pretty well figured out. It's their best feature.

Apple Music has a better index of classical and non-English music, I feel. I like to listen to 60's-80's Russian folk music and Spotify keeps reorganizing their albums of that genre so that I keep losing them (and also latinizes the names, which I find incredibly unpleasant). Apple Music seems to catalogue them more consistently and in their proper language.

R.I.P. Google Play Music. Guess it's off to Spotify, for me. ...if I decide to stick to streaming services, anyway.

I really dislike how subscriptions in YouTube music and regular YouTube show up in each other's feed. That makes it a non-starter for me before you even get into all the other weirdness that comes from a video platform and music platform sharing the same space.

I don't want my YouTube subscription feed flooded with music and I don't want some of the musical subscriptions on regular YouTube showing up on my music feed. I listen to music and watch videos in completely different situations and I really don't want one polluting the other.

I have been using YouTube Music for what must be a year and a half now, and will continue to do so... I also have Spotify (family pays for it) but I use YouTube Music because it's included in my YouTube Premium subscription, and I have faith in the platform... It does seem to be getting better over time!!
