Yeah, I’m really grateful for all the data hoarders out there who seed all kinds of content that would otherwise be inaccessible for no other reason than that rent-seekers aren’t aware of it, or...
Yeah, I’m really grateful for all the data hoarders out there who seed all kinds of content that would otherwise be inaccessible for no other reason than that rent-seekers aren’t aware of it, or failed to negotiate the rights to resell it. I pay a few subscriptions for music and movies, but it’s nice to know if those streaming libraries are incomplete, I have alternatives (and they’re not even that much less convenient).
I never had access to what.cd (or was it oink?) but I lamented its loss when I learned that they had nearly EVERYTHING on there. Unbuyable live show recordings, unreleased studio samples, etc

Even that is a lot more difficult than it used to be. A good proportion of my favorite music (which is not that obscure, just not mainstream in the US/Europe) was originally released on vinyl and hasn't seen any digital release at all. It used to be that much of it was available on YouTube through people uploading their collections, but as channels collected copyright strikes a lot of historically significant stuff got taken down as collateral damage, and I know more than a few uploaders who just never bothered to invest their time into sharing their stash elsewhere. Their respective online scenes feel incomplete as they move on without them.
Do you mean genre-wise or the actual songs? Some of the genres I meant include zouk, highlife, reggae, big beat, calypso, and MPB. This is the first I've heard of exotica and I'm not sure how well...
Do you mean genre-wise or the actual songs? Some of the genres I meant include zouk, highlife, reggae, big beat, calypso, and MPB. This is the first I've heard of exotica and I'm not sure how well you'll find that fits with those. For the songs, I don't have many great examples off the top of my head... some of it is specific edits/mixes of otherwise available music though. I have a list saved on my desktop PC but I haven't checked it in a couple years.
I imagine a lot of pre-90s releases from smaller, indie music labels in more mainstream genres are at risk too - underground house, hip-hop, metal, jungle, etc. Even besides those, stuff like mixtapes are unlikely to ever be available on DSPs because they're gray market.
actual albums would be best for the hunt. I'm talking about piracy / trading groups, though. A lot of what you mentioned is sometimes lumped into exotica, but typically exotica is attributed to...

A lot of what you mentioned is sometimes lumped into exotica, but typically exotica is attributed to Denny Martin and such.
Anyway, I love trying to find hard to find things on the ol' internet. If you've got a list, I'll see what I can track down.
It'd be singles rather than albums, though I would like to get Spragga Benz's unreleased Thug Nature Vol. 2 again. My desktop's in storage, so if I think up anything I'll let you know. Reminds me...

Reminds me of 'world music'. If the descriptions I'm reading online are accurate, it might have been somewhat adjacent to those genres in its day but I'm skeptical that notion has much relevance now.
So, while most sites don't have stuff like this -- Soulseek definitely does. It's not the best platform, but it's excellent for a last resort. Typical exotica is from the 50s - 60s -- at least the...

Typical exotica is from the 50s - 60s -- at least the really good stuff. There are some great stations for this sort of thing, https://luxuriamusic.com being pretty much the best.
Not in years; the list I mentioned is largely auto-search queries left over from there. I was last active around the time QT was introduced and it seemed like the community fractured. Before that,...

Before that, it was definitely easier to come across those gems, but even back then it seemed like some stuff had started disappearing.

I regularly have issues with Tidal/Spotify not having songs I want to listen to on their services so to me it doesn't really matter if they're online or not because I'm pretty use to needing to buy the CD anyway. That said, Spotify and Bandcamp both have really upped the amount of music you can find on them so it seems to be less and less of an issue.

There's always discogs too
Oh yeah! I always forget about them. Thanks for the reminder.
Similar to discogs, I have used MusicStack to buy old, out of print/hard to find music before too.

Do you have an example of the obscure stuff you're looking for? I like a good treasure hunt. :) I listen to a lot of 'exotica' and related genres.

Anything else from Spragga Benz? I see some stuff on my main tracker, and I know him from his work with Easy Star All-Stars.
Do you mean recommendations or stuff I'm looking for?
Stuff you're looking for.
Nothing I can think of, but thanks for the offer!
Maybe a dumb question but, did you try with Soulseek?

(It's also just a great podcast in general)
Had no idea Prince Paul was doing a podcast, that's a definite must-listen. Thanks!
It's still relatively new but if you know who Prince Paul is, I feel like you'll really love it.
