Is there any chance Ukraine gets allowed in with ongoing fighting? Wouldn't their addition trigger automatic mobilization of EU member countries against Russia?

From the article: This process can be long and convoluted even without an ongoing war, so it's certainly not going to speed things up.

      From the article:

While the decision to open negotiations with Ukraine is an important step on Zelensky’s path to EU membership, talks will not begin until a set of conditions have been met. With Ukraine currently at war, it is unclear and unlikely that those conditions will be met any time soon.

This process can be long and convoluted even without an ongoing war, so it's certainly not going to speed things up.

The European Union is an economic alliance, not a military one. Ukraine’s NATO membership would almost certainly trigger Article 5, which requires member states to come to each others’ aid. Their application there is on hold.

Some observers have questioned whether Article 5 would absolutely require a response from other NATO members. It has never really been applied. The jury is still out on that.

Oops! Stupid American made a stupid mistake. I got the EU and NATO confused. I know what they are, I just didn't think long enough before posting.

Although Macron does (or did, not sure about if this has felled though or not) want to develop a security pact within the EU. To deal with NATO((?) even though they are part of it) and Russia. So you might have seen this last year and thought that they went though with it.

This wasn't on the same scale, but Cyprus was let in with half of their territory occupied by Turkey. Technically the entire country joined, but practically EU law only applies in the Greek Cypriot half. So there is precedent for letting a country in with disputed territory.

Alright, but the referendum didn't pass, and Cyprus is still part of the EU. The acquis is suspended in the north, and that's the extent. I could easily imagine a situation where the legal whole of Ukraine joins the union and the acquis is suspended for the occupied parts, whatever those may be. And for the actual reconquest, that'll be a matter for Ukraine and NATO, not the EU.

The point is that having disputed territory is clearly not a barrier in and of itself.
