It's essentially a necessary condition for a good life, just not a sufficient one.

This speaks volumes about their intentions for ordinary working class folks. We're going to see policies that promote casualisation of labour, union-busting, that kind of thing.

Oh, that's the priority? Given NZ First and ACT haven't stopped bragging about how excited they are to remove Treaty references from every piece of legislation they can, to end the crackdown on smoking (which would've saved the healthcare system 1.2 billion), and to maybe have a referendum on the Treaty (which is going to end in fucking riots), I think this government has many priorities!
Former French president François Hollande had this quote to this during the 2012 campaign: Of course nothing really came out of it but still, it's probably the closest you'll hear.

Yup. And Hollande ended up so unpopular that the French left got obliterated and hasn't recovered since, with the current options being the centre or the far right.

Funny that we were all just discussing the smoking ban recently, and now that's all done for. Not only is the smoking ban gone, but the government is now going to be actively promoting vaping.

The new government also plans to repeal tobacco restrictions approved last year by the previous government, including requirements for low nicotine levels in cigarettes, fewer retailers and a lifetime ban for youth.
Luxon said his government disagreed with parts of the policy, including concentrating distribution. He said smoking rates had been coming down for 30 years.
“We will continue to make sure we have good education programs and encourage people to take up vapes as a cessation tool,” Luxon said.
Remember, folks. "The Economy" is a euphemism for rich people's interests.

Just once I'd like to see a head of state take office and say "fuck the economy, we're going to completely ignore it"
Liz Truss did exactly that.
It went swimmingly.

Promoting vaping to smokers has long been policy in New Zealand, he's just saying it will continue.
