Interesting to hear that shotspotter was the impetus for a police response. That technology is in a controversial place in the city. Many of us wonder if it's worth the high price to maintain these around the city and deal with the very high percentage of false alarms that send police around the city. In this case, it seems like it's the reason officers arrived when they did which shows some value. Unfortunately in this case there is no way for police to have been there in time.

There's a strange subreddit called r/chiraqology that I would recommend to anybody curious about modern gang culture in Chicago. It's eye opening to say the least. Perhaps I read it on here, but I once read an opinion that I really agree with which is that many of these youths are knowingly committing suicide with the actions they take related to gang violence. They have countless reasons to experience depression and low self worth, and by taking these actions "for their family/brothers" or "to make it big" they can escape this life without the stigma of directly committing suicide. Relating back to that subreddit, you'll see things like individuals who are actively being hunted by a rival gang decide to go live on Facebook and stream their location.

Anyway, this is just some rambling from somebody who lives in the city and wonders if it'll ever change.

The cult of ignorance in my country is strong and self-destructive.

        From the article

"This was not a random act of violence. It was likely gang-related,"

And the parent comment is talking specifically about gang violence in Chicago. I don't think that kind of gang violence "has become normalized everywhere in the US". There are a few cities (Oakland, LA, Chicago come to mind) where this has become far too common, but it would be absolutely shocking to happen in most of the US.

I'd like to see somewhere on the internet where a conversation could happen about gun violence in the US (in random-act-of-mass-violence, gang, and suicide varieties). But to do that we have to actually put in the tiniest amount of effort to see that a gang drive-by is not the same as a high school shooting.

Man - how much is that Subreddit a record of happenings or a contributor to more drama. I bet beef starts on that channel every day with all of the layered shit talking.

Getting there from here? Probably terribly ugly.

I don't have anything relevant to add to the main topic but I did want to discuss the -ology subreddits because I recently came across r/torontology and went down that rabbit hole a bit. This is the first time I've heard anyone else mention one. Are the commenters legit? Maybe its digital cosplay or a leo honeypot? Or a mixture of all three and more? I found my own city via torontos sub and there were users there with details about a shooting (the victims , the shooters,et) that were later confirmed by law enforcement. There have been other similar posts. The lifestyle effects you've mentioned are absolutely present too. The brazenness to discuss these things on a public forum like Reddit is mind boggling to me but maybe there is just no risk
I don't have wise words and I'm not optimistic things will change any time soon but I hope we do

The gang presence on the Internet is weird, but frequently legit. I have seen an edit war on Wikipedia with a person who was accused of a crime who wanted desperately to “correct the record” on what had happened, while having a warrant out on him, editing through proxies presumably to avoid leaving evidence of his location. These are the same kind of people who make music videos where they lay out incriminating details of murder they committed.

Yeah, today's gangs are constantly online. They chase internet clout and use various online platforms to gain influence and make money chronicling their exploits, usually through music.

If you've ever heard of Lil Durk or King Von, they come from this type of background. Basically, these gangsters kill people and sell drugs while a very small number of them get famous by avoiding arrest and assassination just long enough to make a music career out of the life they lived. The rest die or go to prison. And A LOT of them die.

Watching it all happen on video is pretty awful. Some people are obsessed and treat it like sports. It's a rabbit hole to dive down if you're ever morbidly curious about the lifestyle but generally speaking it's pretty horrific and shouldn't be used for entertainment (understatement of the year, I know).

Heads up for the curious, these drill/gang communities usually have extremely graphic and thorough documentation of people getting murdered. And the comments can be filthy.

I realize most of the victims are other gang members who have, in some capacity, decided to be a part of this lifestyle, but watching a Snapchat of a human being getting chased down like a dog and shot in the head 30 times is disturbing no matter who the victim is.

The vast majority of these videos involve victims who were caught unaware also, which really gives me the chills. They're at parties, walking, talking to friends, and then someone appears out of nowhere to assassinate them. The victims don't even have time to pull out a gun or fight back. They pretty much run and collapse while being sprayed at by one or more people. The shooters take the time to make absolutely certain the victim is dead for good too.

      I suggest avoiding the videos.
