This thread is posted weekly - please try to post all relevant US political content in here, such as news, updates, opinion articles, etc. Extremely significant events may warrant a separate topic, but almost all should be posted in here.

This is an inherently political thread; please try to avoid antagonistic arguments and bickering matches. Comment threads that devolve into unproductive arguments may be removed so that the overall topic is able to continue.

There's not much to this article, so no gift link this time. Basically Trump has been (unsuccessfully) calling for supporters to protest outside the New York courthouse, but he's only managed to draw maybe a couple dozen supporters at most.

But I'm posting this article anyway for this absolutely wacky quote:

“They say Laura Loomer is obsessed with President Trump,” she [Laura Loomer] said on Monday. “Well, everybody should be obsessed with making America great again and obsessed with taking their country back. And sometimes you have to put your personal life on hold and go out and organize for President Trump.

“That’s what I do,” she added. “You think I have a social life? You think I have a dating life? You think I’m married? You think I have kids? Do you think I go out and do fun things? No. Because I’m always putting every extra bit of time that I have into supporting President Trump.”

    Yikes!

God that quote is depressing. From the bottom of my heart, get a life girl.

New Yorkers have been familiar with Trump for a long time and have good reason to dislike him.

In 2016 he took his con to the rest of the country and a significant number were vulnerable but the longer people know him and how he operates, the more disliked he is.

The Kids The Guns Are For (from Kelly Weill, author of a really good book about flat-earth conspiracies)

The same police force that failed Uvalde children is arresting peaceful student protesters at UT Austin. It's not about safety. It's about order.

    ...

These escalations against students are a choice. Police can be patient, even passive. The Texas DPS proved that when they loitered outside the ongoing slaughter of grade-schoolers. Indeed, data shows that police are not primarily crime-fighters, devoting a small percentage of their stops to suspected crimes and a much greater percentage to things like racially biased traffic stops. Their work, by the numbers, is foremost the enforcement of order and inequality along race and class lines.

It’s why the proliferation of campus police has not stopped the upward trend of school shootings, but has led to disproportionate arrests and police assaults on students of color. And it’s why college students’ demonstration against a U.S.-backed war that has seen the mass death of children commands a more urgent police crackdown than an active shooting.

Texan Suing Ex’s BFFs Over Abortion Allegedly Promised to Drop Lawsuit for Sex

In a state with a healthy media environment, every Texan media org would be pressing politicians who voted for this bill over this. This is the state of reproductive rights in the US right now.

Appeals court rules the ex-wife does not have to provide her texts and other potentially incriminating material

Marcus Silva made seven requests for evidence from his ex-wife, including a copy of all communications she had with anyone—including the defendants—about efforts to acquire abortion-inducing drugs. He also sought all abortion-inducing drugs in her possession. Brittni Silva refused to turn over any evidence, citing concerns with potential prosecution.

However, in October 2023, a trial court said she must turn them over, giving her 30 days to comply. She appealed.

Holding that the trial court abused its discretion, the Houston-based appeals court said evidence Silva might have produced could be used to prosecute her under three separate federal statutes.

Of note, Marcus Silva is represented by a current state Rep and a former state solicitor general.

Politico Article peeks behind NYT curtain

Politico Article peeks behind NYT curtain

On its face, a new story in Politico about tensions between the Biden White House and the New York Times by White House correspondent Eli Stokols has little to do with trans issues. [...]
However, as many astute people have pointed out on Twitter (h/t to Sydney Bauer, specifically), deep in the body of the longform article lurk hints about how things really function at the paper. These hints may not allow us to conclude anything definitively about the NYT coverage of the trans community, but they are, shall we say, highly suggestive.
