I read the Robin Buss translation and really enjoyed every moment of it. I had long counted it among the classic stories so old and long as to be intimidating but I’m so glad I finally pulled the trigger on it. It’s an intense and gripping tail of revenge that, as the old Klingon on proverb says, is beat served cold.

The alternate history is, of course, fascinating, but the driving force of the novel is the relationships between characters throughout their many lives.

While our brains allow us to create works of great beauty, they also make us capable of great cruelty, beyond what any animal is capable of. Unfortunately I am at work and cannot dive deeper, but it is a hilarious and thought provoking read, and often overlooked under the shadow of his more well known books

I’m partial to Slitherlink and Pic-a-Pix myself, but there are many other options as well.

The early levels do a great job of teaching the basic mechanics and the levels that follow build on and twist what you’ve learned, and it’s also extremely forgiving with plenty of checkpoints and few penalties. The physics are also very satisfying and you can reach a Sonic-like flow state that feels very rewarding. It also has a great sense of humor that made me laugh out loud several times. Grapple Dogs is the sequel to Grapple Dog, but it might be a better place to start because they made a lot of quality of life improvements over the first game, and it might even be a little easier too.

It understands the tone of Trek and the sense of optimism and comes closest of the newer shows to “getting it” in my opinion. Your mileage may vary with the way it pokes fun at Trek as well, but I think it’s clearly done with nothing but aftection, it’s not looking to roast the classics, it it does recognize the silliness of some of it

Now, I spend the majority of my life in as dim a light as possible, so perhaps I am more used to these conditions than most, but I find that all I really need to play in lower light is to adjust the angle of my screen. Sure, there comes a point where it’s just too dark to play without a book light (the maker of Art& has a 3D printable grip that includes a place to clip a book light, makes very a very comfy experience) but I’ve played quite a bit in significantly less than 100% pristine lighting.
