Trek often goes out of its way to remind us that these are explorers first, and many captains over the years have bristled at the idea that these massive arsenals they command be used for war-making. The might of a federation starship has always been a fallback for the safety of the crew on the frontiers of space where anything can happen, rather than a means to an end. Which is why I think it’s fine when trek kinda turns its nose up at the military structure, these aren’t military-men made to explore, these are explorers who need a military-like structure for self-defense.

It’s beautiful, and exploring the map is thrilling, in fact I would only play this game in pitch black darkness to enhance the atmosphere, but eventually I hit a skill plateau and wasn’t able to advance any further because there bosses I just couldn’t beat, and eventually I drifted away from the game and when I tried to go back to it my skills had deteriorated even more and I realized that sadly this game will be a Did Not Finish for me. At least it made the wait for Silksong easier 😅

Most of the posting is memes and current events, but there are lots of cute little niche discs that we always like to see get some love. There is political and non-political content but it’s easy to filter the politics out by muting certain discs. The site does lean left probably, but there are known conservatives on the site that get along just fine because they aren’t being trolly about it, and they get the cozy hangout vibe. What the site needs more than anything is more people contributing content. I mod a couple photo discs, but they don’t get much love except from me, and even I can be a pretty infrequent poster, preferring to stick to the comments usually.

But I am lucky enough to live in a city that still has historic movie theaters that are still showing movies and haven’t been converted into gyms or churches. But if you happen to live in a city like mine the experience is streets ahead of the multiplex experience. While regal or amc will show nearly 45 minutes of ads before the trailers my local theaters show a variety of different preshows. One plays the classic slideshow of local vendors and movie trivia, another does classic trailers, another doesn’t have anything on the screen, but they play music from different movies. Then, at showtime I watch 3, maybe 4 trailers and then the movie plays. One theater has a cute “no phones or talking” short that clearly stars the theater’s own employees.
My theaters play a mix of new releases and older movies too. Because many only have one or two screens I do need to make an effort to see what I want early because a new movie will replace it in two or three weeks, but there’s another smaller theater with 4 smaller screens that will usually be showing anything I missed at the single screen theaters.
The concessions are top notch too, and I always buy some because that’s where they make their real money. Everything is selected by real enthusiasts, so the popcorn is made with care and tastes amazing, the candy selection is great, and many offer food from nearby restaurants like pizza or sushi. Lots of multiplexes offer beer and wine now, but for a long, loooong time only my little local theaters did, and even today their selection of beers on tap is usually good, local brews, not cheap domestic crap like the multiplexes.
Plus you get to enjoy visiting a charming, historical building with interesting architecture. Some of my theaters are over 100 years old!
And you still get the big sound and big screen, with regular theater seats not gross pleather recliners, and no assigned seating, which i prefer.
And all of this, all of it, is cheaper than the multiplex to boot!

It pairs well with Tildes as the two sites together pretty much cover everything I used Reddit for: Tildes provides the in-depth discussion and Discuit provides the cheap dopamine.

I cannot wrap my head around the “centrist” strategy of alienating progressive allies while embracing dipshits like Matt Yglesias who will never vote for a “centrist” Dem when there’s a further right option available. I live close enough to Glusencamp-Perez’s district that I see attack ads against her regularly. Her blue dog centrism hasn’t stopped them from painting her like an extreme leftist in these ads that are running right now, over 500 days from midterms. These people are delusional. And it’s not like they have bold ideas. All they are doing is driving a wedge into the only viable opposition to the authoritarian right.

The Oregon state government didn’t want this to succeed and set it up to fail, exactly so they could say “look we tried and it didn’t work, so clearly we have to recriminalize it.” The voters passed this expecting the state to take it seriously, but they left thousands of dollars unspent and ignored the advice of professionals on how to implement it successfully. I blame the mishandling by the state far more than I blame the voters for passing this. It’s still a good idea, but only if the people in charge of making it work are acting in good faith, which the Oregon government clearly wasn’t.

It was a helluva time seeing all the people dressed up, talking about what we thought and hoped would happen. The crowning achievement of the day was that I won Star Wars trivial pursuit, the final question being “who is the first character Luke speaks to in ANH?” The winning answer: Aunt Beru

I’m not asking for details because I don’t want you to have to relive any trauma. I just want you to know there are players outside the community that just enjoy playing the games, and I have a deep appreciation for anyone that dedicates their time to making these things that I enjoy. The Playdate has been a big mental health boon for me over the last few years. It’s given me an alternative to doomscrolling at home, at work, and when traveling. It’s helped improve my sleep hygiene by helping me keep blue light out of the bedroom. I am very grateful for the contributions you’ve made that have helped me on this journey, and I am sad to see you go.

I think the Reeves movie is too grounded to mesh well with the cartoony nature of the DCU. Like, imagine Pattinson interacting with Krypto or Eagly. Feels off to me. We’ve actually very briefly seen the DCU Batman in Dr. Phosphorus’s flashback on Creature Commandos. Ask yourself, does Dr. Phosphorus fit into the Reevesverse? We only have one movie to go off of but there were no Supernatural or Metahuman elements in The Batman. The Riddler, The Penguin, Catwomen, these are all grounded, human characters.
I think there’s plenty of room for both Batmen to exist in their separate films tho. I think we could get a Batman cameo in Man of Tomorrow.
