Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news

Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like jeff bezos, anticheat and 2024 us presidential election. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was observant.

But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!

A New Zealand city waves goodbye to its ‘disturbing’ giant hand sculpture that many came to love.

Perched on two fingers on the roof of an art gallery in Wellington, New Zealand, the giant sculpture of a hand has loomed over the city for five years.

Named Quasi, the 16-foot — almost 5 meters — creation of Australia-based sculptor Ronnie van Hout bears an unsmiling human face — because why not?

Some found it disturbing, and now, after five years of provoking controversy and myriad emotions — from horror and revulsion to delight — among residents of New Zealand’s capital, Quasi will be removed from the roof of City Gallery this week.

It will be taken to a new home, the gallery said Wednesday.

Justice for Quasi! I have just learned about him and I love him.

David Shrigley urges schools to prioritise arts – with aid of giant mantis

On Monday, Shrigley unveiled the Mantis Muse, a towering nine-metre sculpture that is at the centre of a two-week alternative curriculum he is bringing to his former comprehensive school in Leicestershire, which he hopes will start a national conversation about the importance of the arts in education.

Students at Beauchamp College in Oadby, where Shrigley was a student in the 1980s, were confronted by the giant insect on Monday, which sits in the middle of the school’s art and design block, with the artist’s lesson plan launching on the same day.

Today's public school curriculum needs a reboot. I know of school systems that either are cutting or shorten art classes, no music classes, no physical activity (gym) etc., because of funds or something else. Am all in with this mantis initiative, hope it sparks art passion on them.

Thousands gather on Dublin’s O’Connell Street for hoax Halloween parade that did not take place (The Irish Times)

Thousands of people have gathered on Dublin’s O’Connell Street with the promise of a Halloween parade which did not take place.

The website myspirithalloween.com gave details of a large parade which was supposed to take place from 7pm to 10pm on Thursday night from Parnell Square to Temple Bar.

According to the website, the hoax parade was due to be hosted by the Galway arts ensemble Macnas which has held large parades in Dublin at Halloween in the past.

However, no such event took place or was due to take place this year.

(Yes, but how do we know that the hoax really happened? :)
