..Forgive me for my.. perhaps.. ignorance? But how does this work.. like in the guy's head? To campaign against gay rights despite he himself being gay? Is it just like crazy denial? or..?

Be secretive about your homosexuality. And preempt any accusation of being gay by being the most anti-gay you can possibly be. People can't possibly suspect you're gay if you're so anti gay, you'd put Mike Pence to shame.
Just a thought. The human mind is probably too complex for answers that would fit this forum.

Specifically in conservative communities - something clicks with male ways to handle internal (and external) conflict, by confronting it with aggression. Dudes are often not raised with much in terms of social skills, or self reliance skills when it comes to their emotions. Aggression and violence is often the easiest path out of internal conflict or emotional strife, if that is against yourself or others doesn't much matter.
So splitting your life in to two, and counteracting the one you're ashamed of by adding some extra aggro to the other isn't all that strange.

Not saying it applies here, but there is a subset of conservative gay people that, typically due to religious affiliation, truly believe that marriage is a religious institution between men and women only. There are some odd mental leaps that are taken on other stances like them being against discrimination protections for LGBT+ because they are for the "small government" ideal where no one is given anti-discrimination protections. The list goes on...
What strikes me is how it must be in his mind. Imagine being an ally with Orban and being gay. Just the brutal cruelty you have to commit on yourself to be able to enact those cruelties on...

This kind of thing has been cliche in Conservative US politics, but it seems like it's been months since I read about some anti-gay Repub getting caught in a bathroom stall...

He possibly doesn't think he's gay. There's a whole subset of dudes who aren't gay but just like to bang other dudes, which is pretty interesting.
That is a fair point although, on the other hand, people are sometimes quite frighteningly good at deceiving themselves.

This happened two streets from where I live.
Invitation must have gotten lost in the mail…
I mean...that's just a great quote from an official source.
Oh you sweet summer child.
