I think in the end Democrats not fielding any real candidates for the recall and pushing for not even filling out the second part of the ballot was a good strategy. Once Larry Elder became the front runner on the other side, and with the events in Texas looming on everyone’s mind, Newsom could very easily push a “Newsom vs Elder”, Democrat vs Trumper narrative and drive up participation. Not muddying the message with another valid candidate was probably a good thing in the end.

The NYT reported this is an indication that calling your Republican opponent a Trumper is a winning strategy and bodes well for the midterms. That feels a bit optimistic - we can’t give every district as much attention as California got and most states don’t have populations like ours. But I think the threat of Trump or a Trump fan in 2024 will successfully motivate a lot of voters.
