Weekly US politics news and updates thread - week of March 31
This thread is posted weekly - please try to post all relevant US political content in here, such as news, updates, opinion articles, etc. Extremely significant events may warrant a separate topic, but almost all should be posted in here.
This is an inherently political thread; please try to avoid antagonistic arguments and bickering matches. Comment threads that devolve into unproductive arguments may be removed so that the overall topic is able to continue.
National Security Advisor Waltz and his staff have been using personal Gmail accounts for government communications. Gift link to WaPo
I honestly don’t get people who want to mix up their personal email with their work email. It’s such a pain to have everything under the same address. Plenty of mail apps let you merge inboxes from multiple email addresses, but it’s nice to have the separation when you want it.
I mean also the level of security required for this job means that you probably shouldn't be checking them on the same device, much less copying and pasting back and forth from Signal on top of it.

A proud New Jersey-ian here today. Even though largely nothing will come out of this, I think, it's important that at least someone has a spine in the Dem party, I voted for this guy too and I'm happy that I did.
I made a thread!
If it inspires the rest of the party to get off their asses and act, even symbolically. He asked them to get in good trouble.
He just yielded the floor at 8:05pm EDT
oops I didn't even see it! I really hope that it inspires more action, at least better than whatever Chuck is doing across the river
To give the slightest bit of credit, Schumer was there last night helping.
yeah, credit where credit is due I guess, but he still has a lot to answer for.
Fully agreed. Even with a very generous read on the intent of his actions he's not meeting the moment.
Trump makes history by pardoning a corporation
Of course it’s a crypto company that is used for money laundering.
How is this being spun for his base? I just can't imagine the positive angle.
Congressional committee asks University of Illinois for information on Chinese international students
A similar letter was sent to five other universities, from the House Committee on the Chinese Communist Party
But ironically, if you tell the US government you plan to try to stay past your student visa that's a red flag. Plus if they tell their government they're trying to stay that can be a red flag.

Alabama can’t prosecute groups who help women travel to get an abortion, federal judge says
This is good, but I'm not sure if this will end up at the Supreme Court and what will come of it there. Depends on what Alabama tries and whether there've been other rulings in different courts.
Boston judge holds ICE agent in contempt after man detained mid-trial
The man on trial was detained, the ICE agent had a warrant issued for him and the judge is trying to figure out if the prosecutors knew and dismissed the whole case as prosecutorial misconduct. The DA's office denies knowing ICE would show up mid-trial but at least one prosecutor communicated with ICE.
Judges do not like people fucking around in their courtrooms. I swear one side of the three legged stool is trying to hold the whole thing up.
