So jealous of their proportional representation system and compulsory voting (90%+ turnout!!) . Congratulations Aus, I don't know enough about your parties but it's clear that democratic citizens won.

The party's success has also tempered a trend of voters abandoning the two major parties, which was the big story of the last election in 2022.

Labor is on track to finish with 86 seats, the Coalition about 40, and the Greens Party with one or two, according to projections by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Other minor parties and independents are ahead in nine seats.

All I know is the Temu Trump label which is about as fun as the Maple MAGA. Australia has its share of issues but they are least bucked the trend of right wing populist governments post-covid.

Congrats to Albanese and the Labour party! I'm an American but I work for an Australian company so I had some reason to be interested in this election. This was LNP's election to lose and it seems like the Trump effect led to voters kicking Dutton to the curb. On top of that, Dutton also lost his own MP seat as well after 24 years to another Labour MP.

Actually, it's the Labor party. The Aus Labor party uses the American spelling for labour, only the UK Labour party uses the Aus/British spelling. It's a wonderful gift to pedants everywhere!

Man, I spent a minute or two wondering if it was spelled Labor or Labour and of course I went with the wrong spelling. Appreciate the correction!

Interesting backstory indeed. I assumed it was spelled with a "u" since I knew Australian English is closely related to British English. I'm kind of surprised I never noticed it was spelled with the American spelling all this time. I've seem many posts from both the LNP and ALP with their respsective logos and not once did I notice the spelling.

Albanese becomes the first prime minister to win back-to-back elections in over 20 years.

I think it’s worth mentioning that the parties have won back-to-back elections in that time, but Australia had such a fun time with leadership spills that we managed considerably more change-in-prime-ministers than we had elections during the same period. Still notable that he’s been able to not get himself turfed by his own party between elections, although I guess we’ve decided that’s not cool anymore, as it hasn’t happened since 2018 (unless there’s one I’m forgetting? Definitely possible — we had a lot of them!)

The party's success has also tempered a trend of voters abandoning the two major parties, which was the big story of the last election in 2022.

While the votes weren’t clumped enough to win seats, I think this statement is a little misleading, as fully a third of all first-preference votes were for independent or minor parties. I think that demonstrates that Australia is more and more comfortable with independent or minor parties in future, and won’t necessarily just be picking between the major parties/coalition in future. We’re certainly not there just yet, but I’m interested in the next few elections to see just how far down this path we might be going.
