Weekly US politics news and updates thread - week of July 14
This thread is posted weekly - please try to post all relevant US political content in here, such as news, updates, opinion articles, etc. Extremely significant events may warrant a separate topic, but almost all should be posted in here.
This is an inherently political thread; please try to avoid antagonistic arguments and bickering matches. Comment threads that devolve into unproductive arguments may be removed so that the overall topic is able to continue.
So Trump has the original FIFA World Cup trophy, and the Chelsea club got a replica. He claims FIFA left it in the Oval Office after the unveiling in March, and told him he could "have it forever in the Oval Office. We’re making a new one." Link is to The Guardian, and here's the Snopes page about it.
I seriously question if it was actually gifted to him as some sort of bribe to get soccer/football a bigger foothold in the US, or if they just decided getting it back wasn't worth the hassle...
It's a bad look either way isn't it.
It's either corruption, or apparent corruption and it's just embarrassing that he inserted himself into a celebration that he didn't earn.
I can't get too excited about Trump's basic corruption and personality disorders, since he does so many other things that are way more destructive and criminal. But this is another example that he's a complete asshole and terrible representative for any group of people.
Ironically I am also so inured to FIFA and corruption being together that none of this even registers.
Fuck I'm burnt out
I'm an American with zero interest in sports, and even I am somehow aware of FIFA's corruption...
Two polls that highlight the growing divide between the Democratic Party establishment and the Democratic base.
From a recent Economist/YouGov poll:
85% of Democrats and 57% of independents support Medicare for All. Altogether, 59% of Americans support Medicare for All.
From a recent Quinnipiac poll:
Among Democrats:
Israelis: 12%
Palestinians: 60%
Don't know/no answer: 29%
I’ve seen some polls where republican voters are not very far from democratic voters as long as terminology is used that hasn’t been demonized by right wing media. So I bet much more than 59% of Americans support what would effectively be Medicare for all.
Fox news reports Senator Wyden's claim that the US treasury holds Epstein financial documents - calls to release them to the public
I shared this in the Fuentes thread but not everyone wants to open that thread. Wyden took his shot and good for him.
