"This policy makes no sense whatsoever," says Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the national deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which released a statement condemning the State Department's action. "It is sheer cruelty. It is literally going to put the lives of more children at risk."

"Sheer cruelty" indeed. I find it difficult to understand how cruel and devoid of empathy people can be at times. I know that in the long arc of history this is far from unique, yet living through it is something else. Not just with this conflict either.

I just want empathy to be valued more. And I don't think that that's much to ask for...

From the article: … This is the first I’d heard of them. Are there similar organizations in other countries? ..

    From the article:

The U.S. State Department said Saturday that it's stopping all visitor visas for people from Gaza. The department made the announcement on the social media platform X, saying that it's halting these visas to conduct "a full and thorough review of the process and procedures" used for granting "medical-humanitarian" visas.

An Ohio-based humanitarian group, HEAL Palestine, is the main American organization helping evacuate people — primarily injured children and family members — and bringing them to several cities in the U.S. for medical treatment. According to the organization's website, it has evacuated 148 people from Gaza, including 63 children.

This is the first I’d heard of them. Are there similar organizations in other countries?

    ..

On Aug. 4, the organization announced the arrival of 11 critically injured children, ages 6 to 15, along with their siblings and caregivers to several major cities, including Boston, Atlanta and Dallas, for medical care.

The news of their arrival led far-right activist Laura Loomer to claim — without providing any supporting evidence — on social media that HEAL Palestine "is mass importing GAZANS into the US" under the "false claim" of humanitarian aid.

There are a bunch of orgs that coordinate aid in Palestine (or for Palestinians outside of Palestine) but nailing down who helps with Medical visas in, say, Japan vs Sweden, is out of my google-fu. Medical humanitarian visas do exist in other countries though, and I have to imagine someone is helping medically at-risk people navigate those things

Malnourished Palestinian woman dies in Italy after Gaza evacuation (The Guardian)

A 20-year-old Palestinian woman suffering from severe malnutrition who was evacuated from Gaza to Italy this week has died, a hospital in Pisa has said.

The woman, named by Italian media as Marah Abu Zuhri, arrived in Pisa on an Italian government humanitarian flight on Wednesday night. Zuhri had come to Italy with her mother on one of three Italian air force flights that arrived this week with a total of 31 critical patients suffering from serious congenital diseases, wounds or amputations, the Italian foreign ministry said at the time.

More than 180 children and young people from Gaza have been brought to Italy since the war began between Israel and Hamas.

According to the UN World Food Programme, one-third of the Palestinian population in Gaza goes for days without eating, and half a million are on the brink of starvation, it said in July.

The most recent evacuations took place on Wednesday when the World Health Organization supported the transfer of 32 children and six adults to Italy, Belgium and Turkey, but more than 14,800 patients are still waiting.

stressed the importance of ensuring that evacuations continue to save as many lives as possible.

They wouldn't need to be evacuated if Israel would just let the fucking aid in or change any of it's policies whatsoever. It's wild to me how all of this is being reported - like it's an inevitable issue. It's is a travesty, but it's a calculated, purposeful one.

I would put it another way: they say politics is the art of the possible, and this is a way to help people in Gaza that Israel isn't likely to block. It's much smaller than the actual need, but I...

It's much smaller than the actual need, but I would like to see it scaled up. Maybe they could even try to help people before they're half starved? What are the bottlenecks?
