Mixed feelings. Obviously it was one pedophile, Lutnick, who apparently blew things up in the end so the pedophile president couldn't get his deal. But we already had a deal, that Trump was already ignoring. So there is no reason to think he would have honoured this new deal or not pulled the small bullshit. As always, I feel the worst for the people this actually impacts, like all of our auto workers.

I feel like there are really no good options for Canada at the moment. Being locked into a bad deal establishes a floor for future deals, whether with Trump or a new government. Not having a deal throws the whole economic planning agenda into turmoil.

If I were to put my hope somewhere, it would be to 'rag the puck' until the midterms are over and see whether changes to the house and Senate might produce a more advantageous result.

Presumably not agreeing to a bad deal that will just give more concessions to the US while still being worse for Canada

Proud moment as a Canadian, especially as the details of the poison pills the US wanted late in negotiations emerge. No deal is better than a bad deal in this circumstance. It's hard to believe the US administration is this awful. I will continue to only purchase 'Made in America' if it is the only option available and I can't do without it.

Super glad we have Carney right now and he was willing to do the right thing and walk away, definitely some nervous moments this week as it was looking like we were going to accept a bad deal.

The great irony of all this insanity is that I now actively search for made in China over made in America lol.

I imagine this is pretty common nowadays. Was reading that smaller boutique American goods manufacturers are struggling more this year partially because of tariffs increasing the cost of materials but mainly because of “Made in America” now being a black mark and consumers looking elsewhere. Makes me feel sad to hear this as an American but this is entirely self-inflicted on us and I imagine it’d take forever to recover from, if ever.

Funnily enough with all the tariff stuff and Canada opening up imports of Chinese vehicles, I heard that it’s cheaper for Tesla to import Chinese made Model 3s than American made ones, which is insane to me.

Heck, I can hardly find 'Made in America anywhere here in the US.' It's mostly been replaced with "Assembled in America."

I mean, he's better than PP for sure, but hasn't he been pretty bad in some other ways, e.g. climate change? I'm a dual-citizen but never actually lived in Canada so only tangentially keep up with the politics. Hopefully I can move there next year and finally be allowed to vote in Canadian elections :D

I'm also not Canadian nor keep up with most of his national policies, but from what I understand is that Carney with his finance background is doing really well on that front while also being a geopolitical powerhouse. My personal hope is that his speech about middle powers transcends his time in office and lingers long beyond.

I don't believe Canada or really any nation can fight climate change on their own, it has to be a worldwide fight. If we hold back our economy and reduce the quality of life for Canadians, which is what I think it would take to have a meaningful effect on the climate and no one else does then we suffer the effects of climate change just the same but not be in any economic position to try and deal with those effects. It sucks but even if Canada reduced its carbon output to zero (impossible) it wouldn't make any difference.

On top of that our government recently was almost thrown out over a few cents/l 'carbon tax'. The people have spoken, if they aren't willing to put up with even that minor effect to their lives they will not accept the quality of life reduction that would need to occur to actually make a significant change in the climate. People have chosen that they are not going to fight climate change and will just deal with the effects when they come.

For me Carney's big failings have been on personal liberty and privacy, especially online.

In America I was hearing about how banning plastic bags from stores was the harbinger of the end times and that the world as we knew it would collapse.

Then most people just started remembering to use their reusables, or boxes, or load straight in their car. And thus was forgotten about 6 months later when people started commenting about how many less plastic bags we were seeing on the beach.

I'd argue that the carbon tax (what you've probably heard re: the environment) was dead regardless of who's in power. It became politically radioactive and Trudeau was well on his way to scrapping it too.

I'd like more climate work but I respect Carey's pragmatic approach which is both needed in this moment and actually getting movement in other key nation building activity that Trudeau never managed (see inter provincial trade barriers). More movement on housing too (we'll see how it goes) and way less patience for the constant dithering of Federal bureaucrats (I say as someone who has been one and work with many still).

Overall I'm happier with Carney so far than I've been any PM in my lifetime.

I still don't like how he's handling unions but I think overall he's a good pick. It has been really weird watching my conservative coworker trash Carney for being anti union while ignoring the fact that traditionally conservative leaders would have acted very similarly. Its like everyone in this workplace that voted for him was a single issue (right to strike) voter.

Maybe conservatives buy into what PP says about everything bad being the Liberal's fault and that everything would have been peachy under the Conservatives. These are tough times and it would be insane to believe that a different leader could have turned this into prosperity.

The last minute changes are nuts. Not being able to make other trade deals is not something any country would agree to. Unless threatened with war.

The last minute changes are nuts.

In a press conference Saturday, Carney elaborated on the “last-minute changes” that the U.S. requested to be made to the deal. He said one change was that Americans wanted to limit tariffs “to autos only [and] ... not include medium and heavy duty trucks, which is a big change.”

Carney also said the U.S. introduced “in the last hours efforts to restrict our ability to have other trade deals,” noting that such proposals would have affected trade and security agreements Canada had struck with other countries. He added that American negotiators also sought “to restrict our protections of our language, our culture, and in effect, our sovereignty,” but he did not provide details on the issue.

A direct result of the US throwing their softpower in the bin. The US already had this. If they asked nicely for more sanctions on Iran or Cuba you'd probably see most of the EU follow along without question. That, and more, is now binned and no longer on the table. As per usual with this administration, trying to get the same through force when honey sufficed in the decades prior just has adverse results.

I understand they wanted to remove French labeling laws on imports of US goods, which is such a non-starter in such a profound way I don't think a lot of Americans might understand. Bilingualism is officially enshrined in our constitution, and sections 16 through 23 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It's like, more than a quarter of our Bill of Rights is about how equal French and English are.

This is like Canada telling the US if they want our lumber, oil, steel, or electricity, they must give up the 2nd amendment. If Carney were to agree to this it would almost certainly lead to Quebec separating.

It seems it's a little more complicated, they wanted us to put tarrifs on imported steel from anyone who isn't America, that could have an effect on our ability to make trade deals with other countries as we couldn't really negotiate on that point but it isn't outright denying us the ability to make trade deals with other countries.

It's still gross and I'm glad we never agreed to it. To me that is them making moves on the 51st state bullshit, the more forcibly tied we are to them economically the more power they have over us.

I mean, he did already suggest annexation. It might not be a threat, but it's certainly a passive-aggressive way of gauging reaction to one.
