Loving this news. I've long been pushing for the Cleveland Guardians to be the name of the baseball team. The Guardians statues are some of the coolest architecture in the city IMO, and more importantly they are giant guardian statues that stand on the bridge you take to get to the baseball field. The statues are like 100 yards from the entrance to Progressive Field. I wish we would have gotten a color change along with the name change, but I'll take what I can get and be happy I got my top choice.
Maybe. I certainly don't buy much sports merchandise anymore but from what I remember they had gone to mostly basic block letters after retiring the chief and starting to consider new names. Now,...

Now, I'm not saying they should have stuck with the block letters, but they're already changing from block letters back to the original font, if we're already changing fonts why not do something better looking.
I think the name sounds pretty dumb, but their logo is pretty nice, kind of kitschy retro-baseball chic. Would have been better if they were called the Cleveland Rocks though.

I didn't like it at first but I like the story behind it as I didn't know about the Guardians statues and they are pretty cool. Not a fan of the logo though. Most modern sports teams sound lame...

Most modern sports teams sound lame because it's too much about the merch. Eg the Cleveland Browns.
I will admit the name is just as dumb as every other sports name ends up sounding, I guess the old ones just get grandfathered in to their dumb names. I do like the Browns for having such a bleak...

I do like the Browns for having such a bleak sounding one, and the Washington Football Team for having such a clinical sounding one, and the Leafs for having such a peculiar one.
The credit for WFT should really go to Edmonton who renamed their team the Edmonton Football Team (as well as the EE football team) like 2 weeks prior to Washington. The CFL has some great names...

The CFL has some great names though. Tiger Cats, Argonauts, Stampeders and of course the Rough Riders and Roughriders. I also like the UofOttawa GGs as a name. I think I like the names that would never get picked these days because there was no marketing and merch thought.

The other genre of team names I really enjoy are the teams that moved cities and didn't replace their location centric names -- the LA Lakers, the Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, Calgary Flames.
Narrator: "Soon it was commonplace for entire teams to change cities in search of greater profits. The Minneapolis Lakers moved to Los Angeles where there are no lakes. The Oilers moved to Tennessee where there is no oil. The Jazz moved to Salt Lake City where they don't allow music."

I support the change. That wordmark is a bit hard to read though.
For some reason they decided to stick with the old Indians font and I have no idea why because its always been ugly and impossible to read.
Perhaps they didn't want to change too many things at once?

That's fair. I'm a fan of the new name but I get why others aren't. My only real counter would be "most sports team names sound dumb"

BASEketball (1998)
I have no vested interest in this, but I like the name and must say it’s about time.
