NBA Postseason Discussion
~sports has been a bit empty lately. With the end of the NBA regular season I thought we could open this up to discussion of how the season went for your team, notable moments, what you didn't expect etc...
I'll start off, as an Orlando Magic fan I'm so incredibly psyched we finally made the playoffs, it's been too damn long. Speaking of the playoffs, how wild is it that Lebron's streak of finals appearances ends with him completely missing the playoffs? Is there even any point in the playoffs this season because the Golden State Monstars could just steamroll everyone in their way.
they're never going to make the finals, but it is nice to see the nuggets actually field a good, playoff bound team for basically the first time since melo was a nugget. it gives me the smallest, faintest sense of hope for the direction of the team in the next few years. maybe they'll even make it out of the first round this time, which they've only done once since 1994 despite eleven fucking trips to the post season in that time.
I know it's a bit useless to say it but if any team deserves a nice playoff run it's the Nuggets. Last year they came so close to making the playoffs but they definitely deserve it this year. I think I definitely respect the Nuggets a lot for having built their team intelligently through the draft, good scouting and adding smart pieces through free-agency they're a bit Warriors-lite in that sense. A lot of people said they were done when they hit that run of unlucky injuries early on but they've got that dog in them which just won't give up the fight.
Game two was insane and the crowd was electric. Love seeing Denver get excited about a sport not named football.
To be clear, I love football. But I also love basketball :)
it would be nice if literally any denver sports team not named the broncos could do something to justify their presence in the state and at least occasionally win a championship
the nuggets in particular are egregious, since they've been here since 1967 and haven't even made an NBA finals yet (even the fucking rockies at least made it to a world series, even though they got swept in that one), much less come close to winning one. i doubt they'll come close in the next few years either, what with golden state and houston and all. they're objectively just not the best team in the west, and i don't see how they'll make it over that hump given the distribution of talent.
the absolute madmen just actually won a fucking playoff series, even though it took them seven games to do it. they literally have not done this in a decade, which might as well be a century in denver sports time, so congrats. i'm pretty sure they're gonna get bounced in the semis, though.
The Timberwolves are so mediocre that I'm more excited about the Lynx' draft prospects than I am with the Wolves. I still enjoy following both teams, but man, they've got to get more compelling next year. I could have gone to the last home game of the season for free, but I passed because it was so uninteresting.
As a Sixers fan man, I'm so sad to not see Dario and Cov putting up the numbers they used to. Wolves are one of those teams that I really want to see succeed in the future
This is the first time I've read the term "dad-dicking" and I like it.
I'm an optimistic person but always a pessimistic sports fan for some reason that I can't figure out. With that said, I think the celtics will beat the pacers but probably not make the finals. I could really see them go down as a stacked team on paper that is more or less dysfunctional on the court. This happened somewhat with the red sox back when they loaded up on Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez and some other sluggers and were expected to kick butt but ended up crumbling in September.
The Bulls were trash this year as everyone expected. I'm really disappointed that Hoiberg was fired, but with LaVine and Markkanen doing well I'm cautiously optimistic about the future.
For the playoffs, the Thunder are my West team and I don't have an East team. I like the Bucks and Raptors, but I'd be ok with anyone besides the Celtics or Rockets winning the championship. I'm excited for a Bucks vs Raptors/Sixers ECF, that would be a great series.
special shoutout to the warriors for somehow dropping a game to the clippers tonight on home court despite leading, at one point, by 31 points. spectacular implosion on their part. i look forward nonetheless to them probably blowing the clippers up again in the next three games and going on to win another title since even in a spectacular collapse, the clippers only won by 4.
