I like my football usually, but I have very little interest in this World Cup. I'm going to watch England's group games at a fan zone in my local city, but even then I have to travel miles and leave in the middle of the night. It reduces things a lot, IMO.

I just have no hype for it this go around.

Rumo ao hexa indeed my Brazilian friend. Just like it has been since 2006! This Brazil team doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, but I'm not as pessimistic as a lot of our compatriots seem to be....

Rumo ao hexa indeed my Brazilian friend. Just like it has been since 2006! This Brazil team doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, but I'm not as pessimistic as a lot of our compatriots seem to be. And in a knockout tournament anything can happen!

France and Spain seem to be the favorites, followed by any of Brazil, Argentina, Germany, England, or Portugal. I think Norway have the ability to surprise a lot of people, too. They've got some good attacking players. Hopefully we see some good goals this next few weeks.

I am rooting for South Korea! Only because Poland isnt in and Son Heung-min is the only playing player i recognize (cause his face was EVERYWHERE in korea). I liked their game against Czechia. Hoping they go far. Bummer that their games are in Mexico and not Vancouver otherwise my Korean friends and i would probably be at a game.

Otherwise, im just generally annoyed with the fifa presence in this city. The org not the visitors.

I'm a HUGE football fan but I'm going to kinda echo @trim here - this is maybe the most disconnected I've ever felt from a World Cup, despite finally being within reasonable traveling distance to watch a match in person. I forgot when the first game was, I didn't watch any of the opening ceremonies, and have only belatedly caught highlights so far.

I've got so many mixed feelings about the whole thing. From a cultural standpoint, seeing conversations that bridge countries like Qatar-Switzerland, Germany-Curaçao, Haiti-Scotland, etc. is super amazing, and this is the event that should produce those kinds of connections. From a football standpoint, however, 48 teams is surely too many. The planned halftime show during the final is guaranteed to affect the rhythm of the teams and therefore the outcome. It'll also be impossible to remove the stench of Trump from this tournament, especially with Infantino so intent on gargling his nuts at every opportunity. Then, with the tickets so ridiculously overpriced, I just dismissed any ideas of making any sort of trip to watch any games with friends, and watching the World Cup final live is on my bucket list.

Personally, I've also had enough of the attempts to court American interest in football under the guise of "growing the game" when it's really trying to grow bank accounts. If Americans don't fall in love with soccer, that's okay, it'll survive without them. Trevor Noah's friend Joe Opio made this astute observation on their World Cup preview podcast to sum up all the nonsense surrounding this WC and I didn't even laugh, I just sighed. Many of these issues aren't exactly new, I know, but I just find myself too jaded to be excited. Maybe I'm getting old, maybe I've had enough of FIFA, I don't know. I'll be surprised if I sit down to watch more than 3 actual matches.

Also, sorry to be the one to say it, but no way is this the team to win the sixth! Not even Carletto can pull that off.

Fwiw the vibe on Tiktok is Americans enjoying Europeans (and other tourists) enjoying American food and culture. A British man made a video saying "you know you're not going to win, right" and the response was mostly, "we're playing? We have a men's team?"

The folks enjoying the games are just vibing, but most Americans don't love the sport. I don't care much about the Men's World cup and Trump and everything has influenced that this year but also until the Women's Cup gets the respect of even having an official song and stats care about the womens' records and the Men's Cup actually gets labeled that way, I won't really care.

But I don't care about most sports like that. I'd love the opportunity to get into it for the Cup and then stop again, but we shouldn't be hosting right now.
