This week I went to China and visited Shenzhen and Guangzhou. There's this moderately popular chain fish restaurant called Taier (太二) and they have this really delicious pickled "sauerkraut" fish dish. I also ordered a cute plush fish keychain (4CNY; about $0.5 USD) with my meal and it came with two fairly substantial bags of cat food (maybe 1kg total). Apparently, they give out free cat food to anyone that walks by the restaurant and shows them the keychain--although I tried to do that at the location in Macau and they didn't know what I was talking about so it seems like it is only a mainland China thing.

I’ve been slogging through a set of essays from 1983 about death practices in XVIII/XIX century Portugal. But I’ve just about had it with this book: there’s a completely bizarre assertion at one point that the Catholic diocese in Braga was created in AD37, and the editor of the volume fudges a fundamental part of a small translation. I’m extremely disappointed in the level of scholarship, especially considering this was published by Oxford! Still debating whether I want to finish the volume. If there’s little details I know are wrong, how can I trust anything else I’ve read to be valid?

As I wrote in my trip report, I visited Death Valley national Park and Ash Meadows wildlife refuge. Seeing the wildlife at Ash Meadows was a lot of fun. Death valley ranged from desolate to beautiful

I did my first unguided backcountry skiing trip! It went... ok! We were excited as there was going to be a good amount of fresh powder and were cautiously optimistic that we had given it enough days to settle. Well, that ended up kind of being true, but the avalanche danger was still considerable so we chose a route that stayed out of avalanche terrain, so less than 30 degree and in some places pretty flat. The planning, navigation, and climb all went off without hitch, but we summited around 1:20pm (as we got a late start due to me forgetting my skins and having to rent some) and it was a pretty warm blue bird day. Also, of the routes we could find, most of the north facing slopes (those that stay in the mountain shadow and keep their powder... powdery?) were in avalanche terrain so we picked a south eastern slope. By the time we were descending the snow had warmed and the powder became heavy and sticky, making the 9-10 inches of it all the harder to get through. Those conditions combined with the fact that I'm on a splitboard made for a very frustrating ride back to the car with plenty of poling, air humping, expletives, and a general sense of frustration. My partner and friend of skis also had a bit of a time with it. Overall though we were able to plan our route, find our path, hit our destination, and return to the car without incident so I'd call it a win. Our friend found out our instructor from our rescue coarse had been on the north side of the peak we rode that day and he had triggered 3 avalanches, so it seems like we made good decisions. Overall a little frustrating but lots of lessons learned!

Then on the way back we hit up a bunch of geocaches and the kids traded some trinkets. It was a good time. :)
