How many of you are intersted in astronomy/stargazing and telescopes?
I think it would be nice if Tildes had a community in which we could discuss these subjects. Stargazing is also a pretty engaging hobby.

I'd love to do stargazing more often, unfortunately for this hobby, I live in a large city so light pollution drowns out most of it. Hawaii has some amazing places for it, unfortunately I'd need a plane ride to get to them... :(
I used to stargaze in high school with a pretty nice Stellaris telescope. It was so nice living in the country and being able to see all the different constellations and even some of the more visible galaxies. When I was able to clearly are Saturn, I was blown away and felt really small.
Then I moved to a city and couldn't see a thing. I would definitely get into it again once I got older and had more free time
Even if you do live in a large city, you dont really need to go far to see a lot more than you usually would. You could even just leave the neighbourhood to notice more of the night sky.
I really want to get into astronomy but I want to build my own dobsonian first to learn about optics. If anyone has any books or resources I would love to hear about them.
For now you could visit r/telescopes. A while back a user (I think it was u/_Augustus) built a 16 inch dobsonian. You might want to PM him.
Thanks, I'll check it out!
Go to ~science and start making posts (link or text - doesn't matter), and tag them "astronomy" and/or "stargazing" as appropriate. Over time, when there are enough posts in ~science tagged "astronomy", Deimos or the eventual future moderators of ~science will probably create a subgroup called ~science.astronomy, and maybe one called ~science.astronomy.stargazing.
Thanks for the advice! I am still new to this website so I don't really know how it functions, but hopefully i'll get there.
