"Dear Transphobes", "Dear Disablists", a new campign from the Scottish Government

@jaivirdi:
Don't give hate a place to exist. This is a new campaign launched by the Scottish government and police. This is how it should be done. https://t.co/95yY0tf6Y4

    I think the problem with this is that if a person is vile enough to not only hold these opinions but go out of their way to actually harass people, they'll not care about this stuff and maybe even laugh at it. This sort of hatred is a mental health issue IMO and just like going to a depressed person and askng them to be happy please won't work, this won't work too. May even reinforce it, too. Take that suicide example, it's a big sin and a big taboo in many religions, will it help to portray to someone a type they already hold huge biases against as a potential committer of a great sin?

    This is too naive to be useful. I think controlled exposure to the other might work better. And psychologists and sociologists need be involved with this sort of issues.

    edit: can't type on a touchpad...

It's far easier to prevent something than it is to reverse it. Just like anti-smoking campaigns, I know a lot of older people who haven't quit smoking but I know very few young adults that started smoking.

    I'd be interested to know what Tilde thinks about these.

      It blows my mind that this stance is even remotely controversial. Why is following and enforcing the golden rule so hard?

      Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but IMO: Amen! I also don't see why this campaign would be particularly controversial or opinions from reasonable people on it would differ much at all...

      I also don't see why this campaign would be particularly controversial or opinions from reasonable people on it would differ much at all (except perhaps by Libertarians?). Scotland and most of the Western world have hate crime laws for a reason and these posters are simply spreading awareness of them, encouraging people to report those who violate said laws as well as discourage bigots from committing them.

I don't know why other than "I am allowed to say what I like, no matter how much harm that will cause you, and if you attempt to use the same freedom of speech to criticise my words (but not me) then you're a snowflake and need to toughen up".

        I don't know how we got here: where a government feels the need to put out these cards, and where other people would claim it's a bad idea for them to do so.

          .. no? I mean it depends which subreddit you post it to but I don't believe this would be remotely controversial on HN (other than "it's not HN content")

            HN would fucking loathe it. There's a sizable contingent on HN who are transphobic and who appear on any thread about transpeople.

              And subsequently get flagkilled… which would indicate it's not the majority opinion. Would like to see links to the contrary if you're going to make claims like this.
