And now I start the fun process of getting a passport, getting a new SNN card, registering to vote and changing my name on all other important documents while Covid-19 rages on.

This week I joined Tildes! Hi everyone :)

I've wished for a reddit alternative for a long time since I don't really like the culture of that site and what it does to people who use it a lot (which may be a lot of us). I'm going to try and help tildes be more active!

I purchased my first domain. It's on the .page TLD. I wanted either .xyz or .codes, but those were either taken or too expensive for what I wanted. I got it from Namecheap if anyone is curious, since I wanted whois privacy features and the price there was decent.

I then set up a static site that I had handbuilt on Netlify. I now am going to try to transfer it to Hugo on localhost then put that online. I already have the front page done, but I'm stuck on how to get posts and anything that isn't the main index.html file working. I'm not using a prebuilt theme since I already had some CSS that I had made to make it look pretty. Maybe that's why I can't get my MarkDown files to be built to HTML.

I also got Migadu emails working with my domain, so I'm able to receive mail. I'm still on the free plan for that, but I'll probably get the $4/month plan once I start doing job searches/internship stuff.

That looks like a nice webmail service, thanks for the link. I've always wanted to get up my own domain (when I have the income for that) and webmail would certainly be on the list.

If you do get a domain, keep in mind that a lot of the discounted first years for domains get you stuck for the next years paying much more.

Example: $6/year for first year, then $40/year for each after. This is way more expensive than a $10/year, and you need to keep in mind how much money you'll have available in the future. This is why I didn't go for .codes and instead got .page. It is way more expensive in the long run and I won't have a ton of disposable income while I am in college. Keep in mind that you'll probably want some WhoIs protection with your domain so no random people can just search up your full name, address, phone number, etc. Most registrars add this for free when you get a domain.

Migadu is nice, and the free plan is good. The only downside is it adds a -- Sent by Migadu mail (or something similar) to the end of each email, and you are limited to sending 10 emails per day across all addresses on your account. That might not be too much a problem if you use it for signing up for services rather than sending mail to others. Or you can use it to forward email to an existing account.

I got advice on a lot of these things on the Unofficial Tildes Discord server, where @hungariantoast threw out the name of Migadu.

Finished a small piano composition using Pianoteq (that thing is amazing). Piano pieces are always interesting and challenging because there's not a lot of fluff involved, you can't add effects and crap, it's pure composition. I've don't have much theoretical understanding of harmony so I mainly focused on rhythm on that one, but it came out ok I think.

Otherwise I went out one evening and I got caught in a huge hailstorm, it was a bit scary. I went in the forest and stood next to a tree with my umbrella and waited for it to pass, I could hear the lightnings coming closer (counting the time between the light and the thunder). Thankfully I managed to stay mostly dry (it got chilly very fast), although my shoes were soaked.

I considered getting a DLC or two for The Sims 4, but they're just so expensive that I can't justify it during the current emergency. And that's with 50% off.

Flown my FPV drone for the first time in local park. Was kind of scary because there were still a lot of people around, but it's great fun, it goes really fast, and I've almost lost it in the field, good thing it beeps when it loses the connection with the controller.
