What did you do this weekend?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their weekend. Did you make any plans? Take a trip? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
MY SISTER GOT MARRIED ;_; It's a happy occasion, they're happy tears I promise :D It was a beautiful day, ceremony was perfect. They're both so incredibly happy, and I'm happy for them. I read a poem of my sisters choice during the ceremony (Touched by an Angel: Maya Angelou) and managed to not break down completely. Danced more than I've ever danced in my life during the reception, and passed out on the couch when everything was over and done with.
Next day I put the security deposit down for a new apartment that me, my girlfriend, and her brother are moving to. Move in is Nov 1st.
This weekend time seemed to be moving at "Ludicrous Speed"
Thank you, thank you! It was just about as perfect as it could be.
I went for a hike with my wife and two younger kids (our teen daughter slept through most of the day).
I did all the laundry in the world. I think there was 14 loads. Somehow everyone's laundry came due on the same weekend, and we just washed and folded just about every piece of clothing in the house. I can't recall any other time I've done this much laundry. It was weird.
Ooooooh, that sounds terrible!
We have a dishwasher, but as of September, we've started a system where my oldest daughter does all the handwashing and it has resulted in me washing almost no dishes (other than what I do during the course of cooking... which is clean most of what I use as I go, but that just seems like part of cooking). It's been brilliant to not have washing up to do most of the time.
I understand completely. When my wife makes anything, the mess is amazing. She compartmentalizes things; instead of "clean as you go" she does "put everything in one side of the sink. This includes things like used pots, pans, dishes, ends of vegetables, coffee grounds...
I stuck to my goal of one drink on the weekend (Friday evening). Got up early Saturday and went for a trail run with Loki (my Australian Shepherd). Watched The Wailing (2018) and slept in the travel trailer for fun on Saturday night. Spent all day Sunday playing Factorio with my partner before squeezing in a 45-minute indoor bike ride.
After seeing the mess going on regarding Hacktoberfest, I decided to work on some contributions to couple of projects I use and care about (additional extension for YouTube DL and resolving some low hanging fruit issues for a popular Python library.)
I haven't yet found a project that I'm personally invested in that is tagged for Hacktoberfest, but I don't really wear graphic tees anyway.
Got tested for COVID (negative), and hung out with some friends. Traipsing about the city drunk is kinda fun... !
So glad to hear you're negative! I agree about traipsing :)
Yes, I don't try to do it too often cuz it's obviously an unhealthy habit to form... but it's still pretty nice every so often!
Third negative test, so far. Batting a thousand! Of course, my mind doesn't allow me to feel well about it and instead I imagine they've all been false-negatives or I've contracted the disease right after taking my test.
Oof I know the feeling, lol. The weird pseudo-sickness
Participated in my 11th Ludum Dare (a competition where people create games in 48 hours). I didn't sweat it too hard this time, but I am still pretty happy with the game I made. Funny how even though I think the games are kind of meh when making them, I always am pretty happy when I am done. Maybe this is the one where I somehow get first place? Probably not haha. I am also always so surprised that I have kept up with doing this for such a long time, I was definitely a very different person 5 years ago.
When I finished on Sunday, I played a bit of rocket league - (now free to play on Epic!) which was pretty fun, love that game so far!
Are you going to open source the result? I'm always interested in seeing what people hack together. Understandable if you're not, especially if you're looking to get some money for hosting it.
Awesome, I look forward to it!
How are you enjoying Rust?
Ha, yes, there's definitely some rough edges. Coming from a lengthy career in python, I do love the "I. Am. Speed." side of things.
I've been working on a simple async crud api in Rust for a while. I still think in Python though, so sometimes things are weird.
Are you using a specific web framework for your scheduling app?
Late last night (from about 11:30p to 1:00a) I finally moved my desk from one corner to the opposite corner. Now the rest of the room is a mess so I'll have to clean up that over this week and into next week. Bleh.
Otherwise I played some video games (Rise to Ruins, CS:Source), and finished rewatching the first season of Halt and Catch Fire.
Went to San Antonio for my wife's grandmother's (well, step-grandmother's) funeral. The service was actually pretty nice; she didn't want a casket or to be embalmed so she was wrapped in white cloth and lowered into the ground on straps. Then we went to an AirBnB ranch and had a party to celebrate her life.
San Antonio itself is a pretty cool town. Ate some delicious Mexican food and also scooted around on those Bird scooters, I'm sure we were nuisances to the locals.
My grandfather and his new (ish) spouse (cause his old one died) came to temporarily stay over this weekend so they could go visit my uncle and where he lives.
This house wasn't made for 2 more people and the heat was terrible so I had to sleep in my parents' bedroom (with my bed's 'matress' fortunately) with one fan and they had to sleep with a inflatable matress my (other) grandmother in the living room with the other fan. Unfortunately it was so hot I had to swap with my mom because where she was was closer to the fan.
Second night wasn't hot so I could return to my bedroom and sleep like normal.
His spouse made a few comments on my body hair that bothered me but otherwise things went pretty normally.
Second day my uncle came to visit and take them to his house and brought his ~-2 year old son. He came and looked at a bunch of toys my parents bought me when I was a kid and enjoyed it. Their visit was a short one so he didn't do that much more.
So my uncle took my grandpa and his wife to his house a few hours from here yesterday and they're almost certainly there by now.
