What did you do this week?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
I've been doing the thing WFHers have been where I'm re-thinking my workspace. I'm just a student, but I'm still at my computer all day, which comes with the same issues an "office worker" has in these interesting days.
This led me to downsizing my keyboard, but also buying two more. I was using a 2013 Razer Black Widow, which simply didn't fit where I work, so I decided to downsize to a Ducky One 2 mini, which I thought was fully programmable, which would make up for the lack of keys. It isn't. So, I ordered a OLKB Planck from Drop, but this was before I realized the weak point of the Ducky. After this realization, I stumbled into the Drops Black Friday sale of the OLKB Preonic, which has as many keys as the Ducky, but is fully programmable, so I ordered that, and should have it next week(?). If it works out, I'll sell the Ducky off, and possibly invest in the parts to build an ID75 (75-key 60% ortholinear keyboard, to the Preonic like it is to the Planck) in the case I got to swap the Ducky into. I'm not even enthusiastic about the keyboards, but rather the customizable user experience they can provide as the primary computer interface.
The only one on Amazon ships from YMDK anyway, which is in China, and can be had for cheaper from the same seller on AlliExpress, with free shipping. However the 60% orthos with a hotswap configuration tend to not fit in 60% cases without extra modifications to the case, which will be a bear on aluminum. Later next year, probably, I'll see about getting one of those ID75 kits instead, since I'll be able to order switches with it anyway.
EDIT: For anybody stumbling in from the internet, apparently there are flat-profile cases that will work.
A couple days ago I overhauled the download/parsing logic for a script I made to search wikipedia for radio stations. I rewrote it in python, made it grab all radio station pages on wikipedia instead of just the ones on various "List of" pages, and I also made it grab the infobox of each page in addition to the summary.
I used it most recently to search for volunteer-run stations. Here's what that looks like: https://i.imgur.com/tgLpqsG.png
The highlights of my week occurred yesterday. I bought my first real Christmas tree (or any type of Christmas tree ever) and bought a second hand couch that was sitting in storage for years.
My Christmas tree is a 7' Grand Fir and it smells so nice. My significant other has been wanting to decorate for the holidays for years so since COVID is keeping us indoors and at home, a tree felt right this year. We have zero experience really decorating a tree so we have a hodge podge of string lights around the thing and a few ornaments here and there. I'm not aesthetically inclined to making beautiful displays but I am liking what we have.
For the couch, our recent stay at an AirBnB highlighted something to us that has been missing in our home for nine months. Our last couch was a 2nd hand Ikea that we bought for $100 when cash was slim a few years ago. When we moved, we decided that we would upgrade our couch since we had a much larger living room. COVID happened though and furniture stores everywhere closed. Fast forward to today and you are looking at waiting 5-6 weeks for furniture delivery. So we basically lived with wasted space in our living room until yesterday! We found a sectional that was in great shape on Nextdoor for $250. I recognized the design and manufacturer as similar to a couch I had years ago, so I bought it sight unseen. We had it delivered through a service called Lugg (like Uber but with moving stuff) and really couldn't be happier.
