My chihuahua mix puppy absolutely rocked it during her agility lesson yesterday. She's coming up on a year old, and I've had her since she was 3-4 months old. I'm really happy with the progress we're making, especially since it was totally unknown whether or not she would a) do agility at all or b) enjoy it. I think it's safe to say she's living up to all my expectations. :)

I've occasionally seen your dogs and have meant to say at some point:

      • Your dogs are very cute.
      • Their names combined with activities like "agility training" give the impression of some hidden life. I'm going to go on believing the course is referred to as the Danger Room.

Fun fact: all three (Gambit, Loki, and Jean Grey) are named after comic book characters. I don't actually read comics all that much, but my partner at the time I got Gambit loves them, and I kept up with the trend, haha. They make such good names.

Dog training is definitely my biggest hobby. It's really neat watching them learn new things and figuring out what motivates them to do stupid tricks.

I grew up next to a comic store with a brother pretty into that so I'd caught the pattern, but I probably should have added that context!

It's just been one of those nice background things that occasionally had me thinking about dogs named Shadow King, or wondering if through some magic of nominative determinism one of your dogs was mischievous or Cajun.

Sounds like an enjoyable hobby :)

Today I went to a (distanced and masked) demonstration in solidarity with the federation of nurse unions in Canada. I am not a nurse, but my mother is, and the state of the profession right now is incredibly bad. Nurses are overworked and burning out left and right, and 40% of them are eligible for retirement either now or within the next five years. Their contract is years out of date and the government is not budging on funding them or trying to attract new nurses.

In my province we have ERs which close at 10PM, that's how bad the staffing is.

There will be a full crisis of care if nothing is done - there would be even without covid cases ramping up significantly in my area. It is incredibly dangerous. It blows my mind how the conservatives don't seem to catch on to how absolutely self-destructive it is to drag their feet on ratifying a raise that doesn't even match inflation while driving away all our aboslutely essential healthcare frontline workers.

Does Canada have the same issues with not being able to train enough nurses to fill positions? My brother's going into the field (just graduated) and something we've noticed is, at least for public institutions, they're very tight with accepting students despite the fact that nurses are always in high demand and short supply. It seems to be an artificial shortage here with barriers put up to limit the amount of people coming in.

The US has had staffing issues since before COVID, and obviously now it's getting about as bad as it can because of the resultant mistreatment of nurses, and them quitting because of all the BS they have to deal with (and, of course, the surprising amount who refuse to get a COVID vaccine).
