Sad news, but family remains the priority. It's nice that this doesn't harm any users, but it might slightly be annoying doing the switch (from my experience awhile back on a different instance)....

I'm not sure how you figure that; the official instance is slow and poorly moderated, and migrating is... really not that big of an issue. I've done so several times, twice because I just wanted...

What do you mean by slow? And can you say more about it being poorly moderated? I feel like I don't know much perhaps because of the way I use platforms like this. I don't post or browse a lot....

You're right though, I had second thoughts about what I said right after posting the comment. It's not that big of an issue. Also, that's the instance I was actually in! I really loved it there. Where is your home now, if you don't mind sharing?
In general, having to migrate accounts means that connections will be lost. They probably aren't the most valuable connections, so I suppose that's okay if you don't want a large audience; people...

It reminds me of a pre-Facebook world, though, where you lose touch with most school friends because people move and change phone numbers. I wasn't in touch with most high school friends until most of us reconnected on Facebook after a reunion. In many cases I'm not sure I got much value from reconnecting, but if you don't then maybe you wonder what might have been.
It seems like many virtual communities are built on loose ties between people who don't really know each other well and don't try all that hard to maintain connections, so if the forum goes poof, that's the end of it.
This implies that long-running forums have some value in keeping society somewhat less atomized.
I mean, with following migration and follower migration widely supported and pretty much seamless, I really don't see that as an issue. I didn't lose any connections upon migrating from cybre.space.

On the second server it was more of a brownout. Maybe I could have done a migration if I tried.

I found most of the answers to my questions here: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/06/how-to-migrate-from-one-server-to-another/
