I've built literally thousands of ribbon cables with IDC press-fit connectors. The only thing that made it tolerable was good quality tools (we had a nice jig and a great clamp).
I like this video. He does a good job explaining some of the pitfalls and things to look out for.
When he does the split and twist my suggestion is to use something like masking tape to keep it all in place before putting the cable and connector into the vice.
But it's really nice to see a hardware project done right.
Now this is DIY.
