One of the things I do with any security camera I setup is position it so that it doesn’t invade on my own privacy.

I’m fine with a camera pointed at my stove or front door. A camera pointed at my couch or bed is a huge nope for me.

That does present a challenge, dog cameras. I try to get around that by having places for the dog to be that allow a camera to be placed without violating my above rules.

I think it’s important to note any camera system can be attacked. I’m not savvy enough to feel comfortable saying my own personal setup is more or less secure than one of the branded setups (blink, eufy).

But this doesn’t address what branded companies could be doing with recorded data. The rules above cover wandering the house in a bath towel. It doesn’t cover foreign nationals spying on US citizens, crazed marketers trying to build ad profiles or enraged stalkers profiling your parking habits. A data leak is handing off personal data to all those parties simultaneously.

The average cloud-based camera like Ring or Wyze is a lot more succeptable than my IP camera that only stores footage to an SD card and one of my servers.

My IP camera just directly runs into a second NIC in my server. My server's fileshare is the only internet it knows.
