This story reminded me of a part of the Mirai Confessions story. One of the kids there tried a similar scam to drum up clients for their legitimate DDOS protection business, mostly by knocking off companies with their DDOS botnet.
To a couple of the potential customers, the timing of an attack immediately followed up by someone who could protect them was a little concerning and in the end the scheme was not effective at getting them into legitimate business.
The entire story is well worth a read and could probably be a post on it's own.
