Can anyone help me find a camera app that asks me to pick a folder for the photo either when I open the app or immediately after I take a photo?
I'm trying to get away from the lifestyle of taking a shit ton of photos and then laboriously organizing them at a later date. I could totally take a photo, switch to the gallery app, select that photo, and then move it to the right folder, but as many tilders can probably relate, that is not conducive to the ADHD lifestyle. I need something at the point of contact.
Brief privacy anecdote
I'm trying to migrate from Google Photos and generally become more self-reliant when it comes to data management. So while I value Google's auto organization capabilities, the privacy implications wig me out.
I once took a picture of a physical photo I had of my late grandfather to send to my dad. It automatically backed up to google. Later, it notified me and asked "who is this?" showing a close-up of my grandpa from that photo. Can't explain why, that was just a little unsettling for me. So that's why I'm currently overhauling my photo organization/back-up methods.
you can do this with "Automate" app from play store. just create a new flow, use "Pick file path" and "Capture image" blocks. in capture image's destination option set it to pick file path's output variable ("Picked path" is default) and set the package to your camera app. easy, right ?
I've used similar apps before, but always looking for new ones. I'll def download and give it a try. Can't believe I didn't think of a solution like this on my own. Thanks!
I don't know of any such apps. That being said, from a photographer's point of view, how we usually handle it is that we use a dedicated program for image ingestion with hotkeys for easy categorization. Lightroom has its own, but many people swear by PhotoMechanic. I personally FastRawViewer. It's a bit overkill for phone images, but that's how we'd cut down hundreds of thousands of images to a few hundred organized keepers.
Thanks for the response, I'm familiar with Lightroom and Bridge, but I really want something thats at the point of contact. I don't have THAT many personal photos, so if I was going to use one of those tools I might as well just sit down and go through my gallery app manually.
Either way I appreciate the suggestion!
Based on Google photos I am assuming Android. Have you ever used Tasker? This is probably something that can be set up.
I use it to cycle my wallpaper and manage small features of my phone. It's a super power app.
Edit:
This existing Tasker project may be what you're looking for? It may take some tweaks and it pretty above my level. But the OP may be able to help. Tasker community is a pretty good one.
I wonder if it would be useful enough for the OP to have a simple widget that when you click it, it would move all the recently taken photos into a new, named, folder.
Push a button. Take a bunch of photos with normal camera apps, even switching between different apps. Then push the button again and you have a folder with only the recent photos
I know this is absolutely something Tasker can do, but I also know it's above my experience level...
This sounds like a perfect way to implement it. I'll start playing around!
I feel like such an idiot for not thinking of this. I've used Tasker loads of times for all kinds of crazy shit, but turned all my profiles off awhile been when I started minimizing my phone usage. Can't believe I didn't think of this sooner. Thanks so much. I'll see what I can put together!
I haven't used Tasker yet, but I'm a big fan of Macrodroid. I just checked and it also has a "photo taken" and I think you could pretty easily set up a macro to do this. Might be another option to consider since I'm not sure how hard it is with Tasker so just throwing this out there as another option.
Love it, thanks. Seems like the UI is a little easier to navigate too based on my experience with tasker.
It's one of the few apps I was more than happy to buy the full version of because the free version gives you full access to test all the features and wasn't bloated with ads. The developer is super active with rolling out features and has incorporated a lot of commonly requested features over the last two years I've been using it. Great app with a crazy amount of functionality.
Time to turn them back on! Tasker is the best when you don't actually see it.
Currently I have tasks for:
If you like mucking around with your phone's aesthetics at all, Kustom (or KLWP) is a similar kind of app with a lot of really powerful features. I really like the custom animations you can muck with. Similar learning curve to tasker, and just as deep functionality. They can work in tandem too.
I have used the Kustom widgets for years. I didn't know until just now that there is more in that app family.
