That company (ente) is interesting. I took a look through their site, and their offering so far is a Google Photos replacement, called Ente Photos. Anytime I've seen comments about replacing GPhotos it's always been Immich. Does anyone here run either? How has the experience been? Is it worth the "hassle" in your opinion?
On topic, it's nice to see Mozilla funding cool projects, but I'll always be sad about them kicking Servo out. Were there other recipients from the Builders gathering as well? I don't know how that works.
I run Immich on my server at home and I really really like it. I run quite a few applications at home in my quest to de-cloud my life and Immich is my favorite app next to Jellyfin and Bitwarden....

It’s quite easy to set up and their documentation is great. It’s still in beta so they don’t recommend you to solely rely on it but I’ve never had any trouble, and I take regular backups in case anything would go wrong.
What I am missing is more functionality in the mobile app (iPhone) as well as the mobile app being able to properly display HDR media. But besides that it has the functionality I want in a photo app (face recognition, tagging, geolocation, etc…)
I might try Ente out just to see how it compares to Immich but doubt I’ll switch to it. I’ve grown so attached to the Immich project and it’s devs :)

I've been using it for a couple of months and it works great. Has a neat feature of showing you the upcoming authentication code when the current is near expiration.
I host Immich on a VPS so that I can occasionally share albums with friends. Everything about Immich, based on my use, is great! Face recognition and all. My biggest complaint (if you can even...

Everything about Immich, based on my use, is great! Face recognition and all. My biggest complaint (if you can even call it that) is that I have to update quite a lot.
I am also somehow rather "breaking change"-proof with Immich I believe. It's because I only use the External Libraries feature and never upload anything directly...
I haven't read much about Ente but if they'll really have to offer something much better than Immich before I start paying.

I've been using them for a bit over a month now, and their services have been great. Just did a takeout of all my google photos and was able to upload them without any issues. It doesn't have any of gphotos fancy AI features (collages, memories, etc etc) but I never used them so I find what it does provide more than adequate.
It's the first time I've seen Ente, too. The main downside I see is that the pricing seems a bit steep for many people, since it's just for photos. It's yet another subscription. By contrast,...

I'm not sure how much storage I need, but for photos, it keeps growing.
Actually, it looks like Ente does have self-hosting: https://help.ente.io/self-hosting/ Edit: also, those prices are for a "family plan." They let you add up to five people, who share the storage...

It looks like "External Library" is a way to get photos from externally-managed storage. What do you use for storage?
I am not sure if I understood the question but I use the hard drive of the same VPS it’s hosted on.
Ah, okay. I was wondering if it was something fancier like S3.

Edit: also, those prices are for a "family plan." They let you add up to five people, who share the storage quota, but have separate accounts.
