Apparently they were supposed to make that transfer to an account of Banco do Brasil, but sent it to Caixa Econômica Federal instead. They sent the money to an entirely different bank. They are both government banks with private capital as well. I don't really understand how that works but they are the official government banks.
I just saw that the STF ordered the money to be transferred to the right place regardless of any action from Twitter. So that is being resolved as we speak. Just a freak error.
The fine amount was roughly US$5M, which is in a sense not that much, but definitely enough that you'd think you'd doublecheck the payee before signing the check, so to speak. I'm curious whether...

I'm curious whether anyone has good numbers on whether we hear about this sort of flagrant incompetence from billionaire-personality-cult organizations (see also: Donald Trump's legal team crab bucket) because they actually tend to incompetence, or just because the deranged lunatic at the center makes them inherently more news-worthy. (I know I strongly suspect the former—I sure wouldn't work for Musk—but that's hardly scientific.)
I'd certainly assume the former as well - I definitely read a study at some point on the impact when it's scaled up to the nation state level in the form of a dictatorship: eventually everyone...
I'd certainly assume the former as well - I definitely read a study at some point on the impact when it's scaled up to the nation state level in the form of a dictatorship: eventually everyone who'll contradict them, even with factually correct information, is squeezed out and the leader ends up making decisions based on what people think they wanted to hear rather than anything based in reality. Even nominally competent (albeit evil) leaders like Putin get fucked by that one, so when your starting point is Four Seasons Total Landscaping I feel like there can't be much hope...
But I've also been surprised how little verification is apparently done when large organisations are transferring a few million here and there, so I feel like this one could go either way.
Hell, it could've been a childish edict direct from Elon for all I know: the billionaire equivalent of "fine, here's your money, I didn't want it anyway" and dropping it on the ground in front of them.
It could however also be a way to delay the reinstatement of X ahead of today's elections, or simply their fuck-up. Supposedly, X's lawyers claim to have paid the fine with a deposit slip provided...

“X Brasil was never ordered to make this payment by depositing it in the account linked to these proceedings (Banco do Brasil - code 0001; agency 1607-1, account 170500-8). On the contrary, the payment was made by means of a deposit slip issued by Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF) in accordance with the guidelines received from the Federal Supreme Court,” the document says.
