I have to ask, are those AI renders of people convincing to most viewers? All of the examples in the video are deep in uncanny valley to me. They are so shiny and smooth.

Much like bad English in scam emails, it selects for the credulous.

I get that. I just don't know what percentage of people are deeply uncomfortable with that kind of image. I get the same way when I see videos with heavy filters on them. Plastic people are creepy...

My hunch is it works very well on older folks with bad vision. AKA, people who are more trusting and less likely to see typos (or who just brush them off as their eyes).

There's some YouTube channels that I've come across that just churn out fake stories (stuff like "Baron Trump Destroys Atheist Harvard Professor in Debate on God," boy do I wish this title was an exaggeration) that are written by AI, feature 5-10 AI pictures on loop, read by an AI voice over. To those of us in the loop they're clearly fake through and through (and the captions admit that they're fiction intended to "entertain" if you open the expended view and read to the bottom), but the folks in the comments are just eating it up and it's clear that it so precisely cators to something they want to believe that they didn't stop to consider if it's real.

Simultaneously jarring and alarming because they look like they get a LOT of views.

I’ve also noticed a lot more clickbait content on YouTube recently, and I don’t even look at home page. There’s a specific type that I get recommended: A pseudo documentary about some subject with an AI narrator. I watched a few and most are repetitive and have poor or incorrect writing. The jarring thing for me is that the AI narrator usually sounds just like David McCullough. It’s weird to hear a famous narrator talk about some dumb gossipy topic and use informal grammar. I guess he could take legal action against them but I’m sure there are too many doing it. But if google can detect songs and content they should be able to detect unauthorized impersonations.

Feel free to move this an and update tags, I wasn’t really sure where it should go or what tags to put.

They've always intrigued me in that it's such an oddly specific but glaringly red-flaggy genre. I've been curious but never wanted to click through to investigate, so I'm glad someone else has!

I have web design skills. I could put something like this together. I really really need some income right now.

I won't do this, of course. But damn if I'm not tempted to be inspired and try to do some sort of drop shipping or something. :(
