What happened with all that drama surrounding Wordpress?
I was about to recommend wordpress.com (free tier) to someone and realized I have no idea if I should. I am not a tech person but I should have an idea of what to suggest when someone even less technical ask me for advice. Did it all die down? Is Wordpress safe to use now?
Afaik the lawsuit is still ongoing -- looks like there was a settlement conference on July 10 but that the parties didn't reach an agreement. Lawsuits take time, so it's not that much of a surprise that they aren't further along. The reason you've stopped hearing about it is presumably because Mullenweg finally started listening to his lawyers and stfu about it all during the ongoing litigation.
Matt stopped putting his foot in his mouth every other day, so that's good. As far as I know, work continues from community members to reduce the dependence on Automattic (see AspirePress).
WordPress has arguably lost some faith from users, but it was always safe to use. It has an excellent development ecosystem and documentation, and the frontend editor (Gutenberg) is a good solution for lay users. It's suitable for many projects, though not all. While setup is not difficult, it's also not trivial for non-technical users. They'll be required to create a database, copy files, and potentially install a theme.
I can tell you that a webserial novelist I follow is pulling all his work off of WordPress and migrating to Royal Road to protect it from AI 'integration'.
Is it a good webserial (and if so what is it?)
Yes, and it's A Practical Guide to Evil, which is getting re-edited, expanded, and published next month.

The author's writing a new book too, chapter by chapter:

I feel like I'm in a cartoon and I blinked and am covered in fandom merch. I also am disappointed in my inability to find a gif of this phenomenon.
However, you have swayed me. I am just confused by it being stubbed in August if it isn't all posted right now. Should I wait?
Pgte is complete, and the first book will be stubbed next month when the amazon release comes out. However, there are significant mitigations:
Ah got it, for some reason I thought only the first page of chapters was live. Idk why I didn't see all the pages.
Ok so I should read this book now not wait for the re-write and also join the discord?
(I don't enjoy webtoons. It's so much scrolling.)
If you don't enjoy Webtoon, then I suggest reading the Royal Road version while it's up, and see if you think it would be worth paying money for on Amazon once it's published there (I do and I will). And in the meantime, join the Discord - we're a friendly bunch, we have lots of fanart, and we can fill in any questions you have.
Cool beans. I do have a KU subscription (in part because of Royal Road) and have been working through Super Powereds most recently, but most serial fic ends up there eventually so I may get it both ways.
I have joined the discord and am so unused to having zero hoops to jump through that I'm lost 😅
Then let me welcome you! If you create a thread under #new-readers, someone will be along to help you get oriented - the general chats are all filled with spoilers.
