Which Substacks do you subscribe to/follow?
Im dabbling in substack and starting with this one food writer.. but who else should i follow? I see a lot of people post these interesting essays from Substack - any general recs?
It's a bit like saying you're getting into reading without saying what kind of subject.
I follow (ish, see below) Christopher Schwarz because he's often relevant to some of what I do professionally and very much aligned in approach and ethos. If you aren't into woodwork he's probably a weird one to read though.
But substacks are just blogs behind a pay wall, don't look for them, look for good people publishing, whatever platform they're using.
There's some great stuff on substack but I only cough up the $ when I really need the content, due to substack being very happy to take Nazi content and money.
What're you into?
The only one I regularly read is Scott Alexander's Astral Codex Ten.
I made one in 2024 because I was hoping to convert various drafts I've had prepared over the years into proper posts, but I keep putting it off. Although in 2025 after a major political figure was killed I did feel like the energy was hectic enough that it did push me to write an off-the-cuff post about debate bros and how their public performances are usually equivalent to smurfing on uneducated randoms.
Every once in a while I feel motivated to try again because I want to connect with more people in order to share and discuss thoughts and ideas, but it keeps getting pushed out. I also tend to jump around topics and it feels like most platforms reward you for focusing heavily on a single topic so that you eventually become known as the main guy for some topic, but I don't want to become that.
What food writer is it? It would be funny if it's Sohla El-Waylly, because she's all I'm subscribed to.
You can probably tell from the links I share. Construction Physics is pretty good.
