I may die of shock if this proposal passes muster - there won't be enough popcorn in the world if the complete dirt on how Facebook monetizes its user base becomes available.

There was a tiny schadenfreude festival in my household when Facebook stock tanked, but more than a little disgust that the market was ostensibly punishing the company for planning long-term spending to invest in security.

Seriously though - If facebook gives zero fucks about its users' privacy, the market gives less than zero considering that it's what is pushing for these abuses (or rather, the money that can be made by doing so) in the first place.

And let's not forget that Facebook and its ilk are exploiting human cognitive vulnerabilities to condition users into formerly unnatural levels of exhibitionism and identity polarization. All the better for their surveillance engines, and manipulative paying customers, to gather data and abuse it.

The money indeed drives all else, whenever you dig into any issue there it is, waiting languidly in its foul cave. Not being sarcastic, just dramatic.

The recommendations look quite thorough. Why does it seem that all other developed countries have more functional governments than the United States of Regulatory Capture?

I hope the recommendations become more than recommendations with teeth to bite and bite hard and not in some distant future tbd. The only way this type of malpractice stops is if the bottom line gets hit hard enough and those responsible personally suffer something besides a slap on the wrist and temporary embarrassment at a press conference. Considering the broad scope the stinking rot in social media and organizations like Cambridge Analytica it will be a herculean task. In CA's case, they just broke up and renamed themselves.
